SKINNER SPONSORS NYU ARTS & CRAFTS CONFERENCE IN CONJUNCTION WITH ITS JUNE 22nd 20th CENTURY SALE
Sale features Tiffany, Stickley, Rookwood, Handel, Daum, Steuben and others;
Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Modern styles represented;
1935 MGP Midget Convertible will also be auctioned
BOSTON, Mass. – June 14, 2002 -- Skinner, Inc., one of the nation’s leading auction houses for antiques and fine art, announced today that it will hold an auction of 20th Century Furniture & Decorative Arts on Saturday, June 22nd, at 11:00 a.m. in its Boston gallery. The sale will be held in conjunction with Skinner’s sponsorship of N.Y.U.’s Arts & Crafts Conference being held June 19th-23rd in Boston. As a major sponsor of the conference, Skinner will host a private preview and reception for all N.Y.U. conference attendees on Friday, June 21st from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Jane Prentiss, Skinner’s Director of 20th Century Furniture & Decorative Arts, will give opening remarks.
The sale features many makers including Tiffany, Gustav Stickley, Rookwood, Newcomb, Quezal, Lalique, Dedham, Weller, Roseville, and Steuben, and studio artists, and several fine examples of furniture and decorative arts from the Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Modern movements. The auction also features the ultimate convertible for the coming summer months: a 1935 MGP Midget, red and maroon with a new top, new tires and leather straps (lot 1), estimated at $20,000 - $25,000.
Other highlights of Skinner’s 20th Century sale include several fine works from Tiffany, including a Tiffany Studios bronze and leaded glass “Autumn Leaves” trellis chandelier (Lot 675), estimated at $60,000 - $80,000; a monumental Tiffany Favrile art glass vase (Lot 668), estimated at $30,000 - $40,000; and a Tiffany bronze Favrile glass table lamp, estimated at $6,000 - $8,000.
Arts & Crafts offerings include a Gustav Stickley drop-arm oak Morris chair from New York, c. 1912 (lot 218) estimated at $8,000 - $12,000; a Handel Geometric leaded glass hanging shade (lot 53), estimated $8,000 - $10,000; a Gustav Stickley oak double-door china closet (lot 9), estimated $6,000 - $8,000; an Arts & Crafts brass chandelier with Five Handel overlay shades (lot 19), estimated $4,000-$6,000; a Fortuny textile panel (lot 243), estimated $5,000-$7,000; a scenic painted oak firescreen (lot 203), estimated $3,000 - $5,000; a Handel reverse-painted landscape table lamp (lot 120) estimated $2,500-$3,500; and a Gustav Stickley oak three-door bookcase (lot 151), estimated $2,000 - $3,000, and several fine examples of Arts & Crafts metalwork.
Pottery examples include Rookwood, Dedham, Weller, Roseville, and Grueby pottery. Metalwork examples include jewelry by Macefield, Mary Gage, and Kalo; a fine selection of Arthur Stone Silver; and a Dirk Van Erp Sterling Silver tray (lot 196), estimated $6,000 - $8,000.
Art Deco highlights include a pair of Carder Steuben Glass and wrought metal Art Deco torchieres (lot 293), estimated $8,500-$9,500; four Art Deco wrought iron architectural door panels (lot 289), estimated $6,000-$8,000; and a French Art Deco wrought iron fireplace screen (lot 290), estimated $4,000 - $6,000.
Danish Modern highlights include a Hans J. Wegner Teak and oak valet chair (lot338) estimated $600-$800; and a pair of Kaare Klint Teak Armchairs (lot 353), estimated $600-$800.
