Skinner to Host Auction of Fine Oriental Rugs and Carpets
Intense bidding anticipated on over 300 lots, featuring Persian carpets and Caucasian rugs
Boston, MA – January 31, 2012 – Skinner, Inc. will offer over 300 lots of fine Oriental rugs and carpets – including more than 50 room-sized carpets – at auction in Boston on Saturday, February 11th, 2012. The diverse collection includes Persian, Anatolian, Turkish, Indian and Caucasian rugs and carpets.
Persian Carpets
The sale features an impressive collection of Serapi rugs. Among these is the carpet with the sale’s highest auction estimate: a 13 ft. 4 in. x 8 ft. 6 in. Serapi (lot 137) made in Northwest Persia during the late 19th century. The carpet is estimated between $25,000 and $30,000.
A top-of-the-line Motasham Kashan workshop carpet (lot 136) from Central Persia is estimated between $15,000 and $20,000, and a West Persian Fereghan-Sarouk Carpet in near-perfect condition (lot 139) is estimated between $20,000 and $25,000.
A very unusual pictorial Tabriz carpet (lot 140) made in Northwest Persia during the second quarter of the 20th century is estimated between $15,000 and $20,000. The carpet incorporates a wide color palette and features a variety of Oriental vase and bowl designs.
A Tabriz silk prayer rug (lot 81) made in Northwest Persia is estimated between $5,000 and $7,000. A Mahal carpet (lot 138) made in West Persia during the last quarter of the 19th century is estimated between $10,000 and $15,000.
A Fereghan saddle cover (lot 118) is estimated between $2,000 and $2,500. This small collectible, dated 1882, is remarkable in that it does bear a date; pieces of this size are typically not dated.
Caucasian Rugs
Notable Kazak rugs will be available at the sale. A Southwest Caucasian “Pinwheel” Kazak rug (lot 129) represents this second most highly collected category of Caucasian rugs. Made in the second half of the 19th century the rug is estimated between $20,000 and $25,000.
A Sewan Kazak rug (lot 127) created in the last quarter of the 19th century is estimated between $8,000 and $10,000. An extraordinary Marasali prayer rug (lot 128) made in East Caucasus is estimated between $4,000 and $6,000.
A colorful Shirvan long rug (lot 125) is estimated between $5,000 and $7,000. Another long rug for sale is a Southeast Caucasian Talish (lot 121) from the second half of the 19th century estimated between $6,000 and $8,000.
Anatolian Rugs and Indian Weavings
A West Anatolia “Transylvanian” rug made in 17th century Turkey (lot 119) is estimated between $8,000 and $10,000. From the same region comes an Ushak carpet with an ivory field (lot 86) made in the late 19th century; it is estimated between $7,000 and $9,000.
A beautiful Kashmir Moon Shawl (lot 117) made in early 19th century North India is estimated between $1,500 and $2,000.
Previews, Catalogue and Bidding
Previews for the auction will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2012, 2 p.m.-5 p.m., and Friday, February 10, 2 p.m.-7 p.m., and Saturday, February 11, 9 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Illustrated catalogue #2582B is available by mail for $18 ($25 for foreign requests) from the subscription department at 508-970-3240.
