Skinner Hosts Fine Oriental Rugs and Carpets Auction May 9th

over fifty carpets including Soumak, Ushak, and Seichour Examples

BOSTON, Mass. – April 30, 2009 – www.skinnerinc.com - Skinner, one of the nation’s leading auction houses for antiques and fine art, today announced it will host an auction of Fine Oriental Rugs and Carpets at its Boston gallery, located at 63 Park Plaza, on Saturday, May 9th at noon.  More than 300 lots, including 50 room-sized carpets, will be offered with palates, patterns and prices to suit every kind of buyer.

Persian rugs
Featured Persian rugs include a number of weavings from the Northwest such as two Serapis (lot 115, est. $8/10,000 and lot 139, est. $15/20,000); a Bidjar rug, runner and carpet (lots 58, 60 and 114, $4/600, $6/8,000, and $7/9,000, respectively); a Bahkshaish rug (lot 85 $3/4,000) from the last quarter of the 19th century; a Shahsavan Soumak bagface (lot 47, est. $1,5/2,000); a Shahsavan Soumak cargo bag panel (lot 49, est. $2/3,000); a room-size Bahkshaish carpet (lot 111, est. $3/5,000); and a Tabriz silk rug (lot 81, est. $7/9,000).

From other parts of Persian is a Kerman saddle cover from the Southeast (lot 105, est. $3/4,000) and a Qashqai rug from the Southwest (lot 133, est. $3/4,000).  Representing the West is a room-sized Sultanabad (lot 138, est. $3/5,000) and a Fereghan-Sarouk prayer rug (lot 59, est. $5/7,000) from the late 19th century.

Caucasian weavings
A wide and varied selection comes from around Caucasus.  From the South comes two Armenian Karabagh long rugs, both from the late 19th century (lot 69, est. $3,5/4,500 and lot 125, est. $8/10,000). Northeast highlights include three Seichour rugs (lots 126, 129, 137, $6/8,000, $15/20,000, and $10/12,000, respectively); a Soumak from the last quarter o the 19th century (lot 67, est. $3,5/4,500); a Kubu long rug (lot 98, est. $5/7,000); another Kuba rug (lot 127, est. $7/9,000); and a dragon Soumak carpet (lot 117, est. $10/15,000).  Several Kazaks from the second half of the 19th century will be featured (lots 61, 123, 124, est. $6/8,000, $5/7,000, $2,5/3,500, respectively) as well as a Sewan Kazak rug (lot 1, est. $2/3,000); a Karachoph Kazak (lot 91, est. $4/6,000); and a Karachoph Kazak long rug (log 121, est. $6/8,000).  Rounding out the Caucasian offerings is an Akstafa prayer rug (lot 151, est. $2,5/3,500) and a Talish long rug (lot 35, est. $5/7,000) both from the Southeast, last quarter of the 19th century.

Anatolian rugs
From Central Anatolia is a Konya prayer rug (lot 39, est. $2,300) and a Konya Kelim (lot 119, est. $4/5,000).  Highlights from the West include a Ghiordes prayer rug (lot 54, est. $2/3,000); a Ushak carpet (lot 136, est. $8/10,000); and a Bergama rug (lot 53, est. $4/5,000).  An Anatolain Saf from the second half of the 19th century (lot 120, $1,5/2,000) enhances the offerings.

Indian offerings
Finally, two featured Agra carpets from India grace the sale (lot 25, est. $5/7,000 and lot 140, est. $25/30,000).  Also being offered is an interesting Indian rug from Central Persia, third quarter of the 19th century (lot 135, est. $5/7,000).
