American and European Paintings Go on the Block In Boston

Skinner’s Next Paintings Auction to be Held November 14th


BOSTON, Mass. – October 24, 2008 – www.skinnerinc.com - Skinner, Inc., one of the nation’s leading auction houses for antiques and fine art, today announced that its next American and European Paintings sale is scheduled to take place on November 14th in the Boston gallery.  The sale features 479 lots from noteworthy American and French, English, Italian and Dutch artists.  

American Paintings  
Highlights from American artists include several impressive landscapes including George Loftus Noyes’ Spring Landscape (lot 171, est. $20/25,000) coming to Skinner from the collection of the Fuller Museum of Art, Brockton, Massachusetts; Winter View by Frederick Mortimer Lamb (lot 244, est. $1/1,500); and River View by Louis Aston Knight (lot 52, est. $10/15,000) whose work often depicted flower gardens and pastoral landscapes without figures and incorporated elements of Impressionism that he learned from studying the work of Claude Monet.  

Other American works of note include Mr. + Mrs. Cunningham with Sam Baby on Point at Merry Go Round, Carver, Massachusetts by Aiden Lassell Ripley (lot 144, est. $10/15,000) a student of the Boston Museum School who studied with Philip Hale and Frank W. Benson and focused his work on the New England countryside; Mending Ballet Skirts by Louis Kronberg (lot 298, est. $8/12,000); Early Evening by Margaret Jordan Patterson (lot 242, est. $1,5/2,500); and Boat in Gloucester Harbor by Mary Blood Mellen (lot 71, est. $8/12,000) an apprentice of Fitz Henry Lane's.  

European Pieces
Among the European features is Ewe and Lamb by Barbizon School member Constant Troyon (lot 61A, est. $18/22,000), known for scenes with animals and sometimes, laborers, in a dramatic natural setting, and marked by his sensitivity to the variations of light that foreshadow the later Impressionist movement.  Ewe and Lamb was purchased circa 1930 by Charles Kennedy Haddon, one of the three founding inventors of the Victor Talking Machine Co., Camden, New Jersey, then by descent to the present owner and is being sold to benefit the MSPCA-Angell.

Other European works to be highlighted include Gerard Portielje’s A Quiet "Nap" After Sport (lot 33A,
Est. $25/35,000); Trees in Winter by Stepan Fedorovich Kolesnikoff (lot 253, est. $5/7,000); A Stroll on the Grounds by Ferdinand Heilbuth (lot 40 or 276, est. $6/8,000); and Naperly Bridge, Yorkshire by Frederick Richard Lee (lot 51, est. $20/25,000), best known for his fluid compositions and idyllic settings;

Modern Works
As the demand for modern works grows so do the offerings at Skinner.  Of interest are the following modern pieces: Karl Knaths’ Cosmic (lot 460, est. $15/25,000); Ellipse (Blue, Orange, Yellow) by Ilya Bolotowsky (lot 432, est. $5/7,000); Shaman's Children by Norval (Copper Thunderbird) Morrisseau (lot 428, est. $4/6,000); John Way’s Abstract Composition (lot 452, est. $4/6,000); and Kinosuke Ebihara’s Neige, or House by the River (lot 399, est. $30/50,000), one of approximately 300 paintings assembled by Mrs. Lintott, the founder of the Art Patrons of America and wife to artists Albert Sterner and Edward Lintott, that became the basis for the Lawrence Rill Schumann Art Foundation.

Sculptures
Finally, several striking sculptures will go up for bid including Young Girl and Her Dog, alternatively titled La Riconoscenza (Gratitude) by Giovanni Maria Benzoni (lot 61, est. $15/25,000) best known for his Neo-classical marble works in which the stone is imbued with qualities of softness and life;
Birdman (1959) by Dame Elisabeth Frink (lot 444, est. $20/40,000) who commonly chose men, dogs, horses, and birds as subject matter with this present work from her earlier period of male sculptures depicting bird men or men in flight, which according to the artist characterized "men at war" with "fractured wings or the debris of war and heroics"; and Portrait Bust of Rita Romilly by Sir Jacob Epstein (lot 348, est. $4/6,000) whose interests shifted away from angular semi-abstraction to more figurative forms and he began modeling portrait busts, after World War I, such as in the present work.
