BOSTON, Mass. – May 31, 2013 – Skinner, Inc. will host an auction of Fine Jewelry in its Boston gallery on Tuesday, June 11, 2013. The sale will feature over 500 lots of antique and period jewelry, as well as contemporary jewelry by famous makers including Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Cartier. Skinner is pleased to be offering a fine collection of Marcus & Co. jewelry acquired from a Maine estate.
Marcus & Co. Jewelry
During the early 20th century, the firm of Marcus & Co. produced fine Renaissance and Egyptian revival jewelry, and became known for works inspired by the French Art Nouveau period. Striking examples of Art Nouveau pieces include an exquisite 18kt rose gold and alexandrite pendant brooch (lot 586, estimated between $60,000 and $80,000); an opal, diamond, and enamel brooch (lot 590, $12,000 to $18,000); and an 18kt gold, emerald, enamel, and diamond ring (lot 589, $7,000 to $9,000).
Other fine examples from the eclectic collection include a Moorish-style gold, opal, demantoid garnet, and diamond pendant (lot 585, $8,000 to $12,000); an Egyptian Revival 18kt gold, turquoise, and enamel pendant necklace (lot 587, $8,000 to $12,000); and a Renaissance Revival gold gem-set suite (lot 588, $10,000 to $15,000).
The cover lot is a beautiful pair of fancy-colored diamond and diamond earrings (lot 562, $75,000 to $85,000) set with one diamond weighing 2.71 cts., fancy intense yellow and one diamond weighing 3.41 cts., fancy vivid yellow.
A fancy vivid yellow diamond and diamond brooch (lot 563, $60,000 to $80,000) and a fancy dark orangey brown diamond ring (lot 500, $12,000 to 18,000) will also be offered, highlighting an impressive selection of fancy-colored stones.
A fine selection of signed pieces includes a very chic platinum and diamond bracelet by Van Cleef & Arpels (lot 575, $30,000 to $40,000) and a beautiful Arts & Crafts moonstone and sapphire pendant by Tiffany & Co. (lot 511, $8,000 to $10,000).
It wouldn’t be summer without a few beautifully colored insects buzzing around. An 18kt gold, emerald, and diamond insect brooch by Tiffany & Co. (lot 445, $3,000 to $5,000); an 18kt white gold, black lacquer, coral, and diamond “Ladybird” brooch by Cartier (lot 577, $8,000 to $10,000); and an 18kt gold, plique-a-jour enamel, and diamond butterfly brooch by Cartier (lot 505, $3,000 to $5,000) round out this inspired selection of signed pieces.
