Selling Antique Books, Part II: Eight Ways to Determine Your Books’ Value

Do you have a shelf full of old books? Are you wondering about your books’ value? First, read Part I: How to Tell a Rare Book From an Old Book. Next, go through this list with each book that seems promising.

Fitzgerald. F. Scott (1896-1940), Tender is the Night, New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1934, first edition with dust jacket, sold for: $8,295

1. Dust jackets, dust jackets, and more dust jackets!

If there is one single thing that is a make or break for book value, it would be the dust jacket. The value of a first edition copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night with dust jacket is around $6,000. Without a dust jacket….$300. This huge difference in value is largely due to the fact that more than 90% of dust jackets are destroyed, either deliberately or due to their ephemeral and fragile nature. If you have one on a good book, treasure it and be sure to protect it with a plastic sleeve.

2. Who wrote that?

A book is more likely to appeal to collectors, and therefore be worth more, if you have actually heard of the book or its author. Additionally, some books by famous authors are better than others. A first edition of John Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath in good condition is worth around $2,500. However, his Travels with Charley, first edition with dust jacket, is worth around $100.

3. Where was it published?

The location of publication is an often overlooked but important detail in a list of information about a collection of books. Many titles were published virtually simultaneously in two places, for example, London, and New York. Whichever hits the shops first is the “true” first edition while the other becomes the “first American edition” or “first English edition.” The value of a “true” first is typically always greater. George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four was published in 1949 in both London and New York. The London edition is the “true” first and worth around $1,400. The New York edition is the “first American edition” and worth $250. Location is very important.

VALUE MY BOOK

4. To err is Human. And it will make your book more valuable!

When certain books are evaluated, the number of “mistakes” in the printing process will elevate their value. Thrifty printers will not throw out a batch of sheets simply because there was a mistake on the page. They will correct it and move on. Those first sheets now form an “issue point” that collectors use to determine how early in the printing process the sheet was printed. Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn has over seven documented (and corrected) mistakes during the printing process. If you have all of them (or many of them) in your copy, it can be worth over $10,000. Other copies with a few mistakes are usually worth between $500-1,000. These “issue points” can be found in online references to bibliographical information gathered on each book.

5. Leave no page behind!

Completeness in a book is critical. Even simple pages that have no printing on them, called blanks, are critical to the value of the book. Make certain that there are no loose pages or gatherings of leaves that have come out or are in danger of falling out. One lost page can be devastating to a rare book’s value.

6. Please return to…

Look for ownership inscriptions on books. With luck, they will not be on the title-page, as this diminishes value; they should ideally be located on blank pages before the title page. An owner inscription or signature from a member of your own family is always interesting to find, and if he or she was a well-known person, could add to value.

7. With best wishes…

F. Scott Fitzgerald signature | Books value

Archibald MacLeish’s copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night, New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1934, Auctioned for $23,500

Always look for author signed books. An author signature (by a significant and recognized writer) can mean an increase in value of ten times or more the ordinary value of the book in most cases. For example, as stated above, an unsigned copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Tender is the Night without a dust jacket might bring around $300. With a simple signature, it could bring $8,000. Skinner sold a copy that was signed and presented to the famous poet Archibald MacLeish. This unique copy brought $23,500 in a Books auction.

8. Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover

Decorative visual appeal can increase a book’s value. A beautifully leather bound book or one with a pictorial gold leaf cover can form the basis for a really eye-catching shelf; these antique books are usually quite collectible. Simple beauty in a cover or binding can be worth $40-1,000 depending on the complexity and execution of the design.

With this list of guidelines in hand, a shelf of antique books won’t seem quite so daunting. Did you find something intriguing on your shelves?

  1. Mr. Stuart Whitehurst,

You are correct in your statement that after reading your blog that we will look at our books much more closer than I was, and I’m now thinking of some of the books I gave away.Thank You for a little insight.

    • I have found 2 books I have questions on. The first I have some information on…it is a first edition of Emily Brontes’ Wuthering Heights- edited by Somerset Maugham 1949, published by John C Winston 1949. There are illustrations in the book by ‘Michael’ no last name, and a profile sketch of Emily Bronte by Robert W Arnold. Would you have a value on this book?

I just recently found a book at a local antique store of The adventures of Sherlock Holmes by A Conan Doyle. It confuses me because it has no title page, I don’t know the year or the publisher. It had a picture of two pistols on the front, back to back and what looks like a bullet in between them. Could you tell me anything about this book?

      Thank you in advance!

  2. I have some books that im curious about, whether they have any value to them. I have an Ernest Hemingway ‘For Whom The Bell Tolls’. It says copyright 1940, by Ernest Hemingway, Printed in the United States of America. All rights Reserved. No part of this book may be reproduced in any form without the permission of Charles Scribner’s Sons. It was published by Blakiston. There is a facsimile of Hemingways signature stamped on the front cover. It is black with gold writing on the spine. No missing pages. Pretty good shape for its age. Writing on the first blank page, a name and address and another name with ‘please return’ under it. Could someone tell me if there is any value to this book. Thank you

    • Thank you for your comment. Your book likely has a value of less than $100. It is not something we would handle at auction.

      • While in a local antique shop I found a charles Dickens book,The old curiosity shop. It was published by Heritage Press of New York copyright was 1941, there is no dust cover but on the front there is charles Dickens initials. And it came with a hard box that it slips into that’s original to the book, all pages are there and the inside is immaculate, I just didn’t know how to go about pricing it or to just keep it in my own collection.

        Thank you

      • I have 2 books from 1893. Called the world’s Parliament of religions. They have many pictures and document the meeting of all the worlds religions. I have tryed looking them up and cannot even find them. Do you know the value?

    • I have a complete world book enclopedia from a.through z.Need to know how much it is worth.

    • We recently experienced a fire in our office where I had several vintage books. Two books that I am most sad about that were ruined by water and mold were The Frozen Deep and Other Stories, Volume 1 and Volume II, published in 1874. Can you tell me the value of these books?

      Thank you,
      Bennie Bock, II

  3. I have a Leather Covered Book, The Name of the Book is “The true Scripture-doctrine of original sin stated and defended” By Niles, Samuel.
The Book says the 2nd Edition. The 1st was by John Taylor.

Published in Boston in 1757, Printed and sold by S. Kneeland, opposite to the probate-office in Queen-street.

The Book has Samuel Dunbar signature. The Reverend Samuel Dunbar, was an American
Patriot, he was known as the eldest Son of Liberty, compatriot of John Adams and Paul Revere, a mentor of Roger Sherman. 1774 Dunbar bore witness to the birth of liberty. He was instrumental in arranging the meeting between Paul Revere, Samuel Adams and Joseph Warren to write the Suffolk Resolves, believed to be the precursor to the Declaration of Independence. The meeting took place at the Doty Tavern in Canton, Massachusetts on August 16, 1774. Delegates from around the surrounding towns gathered at Doty Tavern, at the foot of the Blue Hill, to hold a “Congress.” This meeting would bring about the emancipation from the tyrannous hands of the king. What would become known as the Suffolk Resolves was first discussed at this meeting. Dunbar, against the advice of family, friends and fellow ministers, attended the meeting and opened with a prayer that was described as “the most extraordinary liberty prayer” ever heard. It would not be hard to imagine coming from a person who once prayed that God would “put a bit in their mouths and jerk them about, send a strong northeast gale, and dash them [the British fleet] to pieces on Cohasset Rock.” Dunbar was the first Clergyman to read the Declaration of Independence from a public pulpit in August of 1776.
Samuel Dunbar (1704-1783) a Harvard educated parish minister.
Rev. Samuel Dunbar’s Eulogy Book sold for $600 on Live Auction. His Eulogy was read by Paul Revere.
    So the two questions are.
    1) What is the value of this book?
    2) Having Samuel Dunbar signature make the book worth more?

      • I am inquiring about a book called Quo Vadis A Tale of the Time of Nero by Henryk Sienkiewicz translated from Polish by Dr. S.A Binion and S. Malevsky Published by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. New York. The book is Blue Cloth hardback with green, purple and gold on the front. Is has two sets of copyright dates on the inside, 1897, by Henry Altemus, and 1905, by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. If you could provide me with any information I would forever be in your debt. Thank you for extending the courtesy of your wisdom.
        Sincerely, Deborah R. Adams-Flint

        • Deborah, the first was published in London in 1901. All copyright dates are the same. This later edition goes for $15 to $50 on the retail market, depending on condition.

      • I have a book that is not in good condition however all pages are very readable, it is “The Doctrine of the Saints Perserverance Explained and Confirmed” by John Owen, Printed by Leon Lichfield, printer to the University Anon Dom: 1654.

Inquiring on how much and would it be authentic

        Thanks Andrew

        • Andrew, this book is worth about $350 at auction in good condition and complete. You may email a photo of the title page to me and I can tell you whether it is truly from 1654 or not.

    • I have a lovely book I cannot find reference to anywhere. It is a version of The Poems of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with a biographical sketch by Nathan Haskell Dole and published by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co, 1901. What makes it unusual is the cover. It is tightly bound in brown suede and has two multicolored leaves that look and feel handpainted onto the sued. the front cover above the leaves and the spine are both stamped or painted with a gold script “Longfellow”. the letters feel pressed into the suede. the page edges are gilt and red. It belonged to my great grandfather, who was born in 1870s.

  4. I have a first edition Every Horse Owners Cyclopedia, by J.H.Walsh, Ellwood Harvey and John Elderken. It is edited by Robert McClure, was sold by subscription and published by Porter & Coates, 822 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Mears & Dusenbery, Sterestypers and H. B. Ashmead, Printer. Copy write is 1871 and has over 100 engravings within the book. The cover is emerald green cloth with gold and black embellished pictures on the front and binding. As far as I can tell all the pages are there but the binding is loose and worn on the top and bottom. This is a hard copy and has no dust cover. Any help you could give me will be most appreciated. The information on your site was very helpful. Thank you, Diane

    • Diane, Thank you for your comment. Every Horse Owner’s Cyclopedia likely has a value below $100, and is not something we would handle at auction.

  5. I have a book History of The Indian Tribes of The United States..Wrote in 1857 addressed to President James Buchanan By Henry R. Schoolcraft. It’s leather in perfect condition 744 pages some with colored pictures.

    • Richard, The Schoolcraft American Indian Tribes book is one of a six volume set. We sold five volumes six for $650, so one lonely volume would be worth around $150.

  6. I have an old Book of Common Prayer (includes the sacraments and the Psalms of David) printed for the Church of England in 1665 by John Bill and Chriftopher Barker, printers to the King.

I’ve been trying to find a value for this book for sometime and can’t find anything close to compare it to. I must not be looking in the right place. It is leather bound and well used.

Can you help me by pointing me towards a website or person who can give me an idea as to the value of this book?

    Thank you.

  7. 9. I have a copy of The Seawolf, signed by Jack London. In extremely good condition. No published date, only last copyright date of 1931. Published by Grosset&Dunlap.

    • The first edition of the Sea Wolf came out in 1904, and is collectible. This later edition would not be appropriate for a rare book auction.

  10. I thank you for your insight to on what to look for in old books.
I was wondering if you could direct me further on value.

In His Steps: What Would Jesus Do by Reverend Charles M. Sheldon

    Copyright 1897 Copy 1899 H M Caldwell Company.

Oddly, there is inscriptions by Lolo D. Gillispie dated 1904 and another by Donna J. Barrell dated 1936.
I researched Gillispie, and found that she was a Pioneer woman dentist for 60 years in Galena, KS. Barrell was her daughter.
The book is red cloth like.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

    • Thank you for your comment. Your book likely has a value of less than $100. It is not something we would handle at auction. It’s interesting, and cool, but not collectible.

I was wondering if you ever had any feedback on your book on Shakespere as I also have a copy, mine is dated 1882 but it is not in the best condition as it has some watermarks. I would be interested to hear what, if anything, you have learned about it since you posted almost a year ago.
            Regards,
            Erynne.
            Queensland, Australia.

All are stamped Made in France. Published by Miniature Dictionary Publishers, Inc., Sole Agent M. Minkus, New York. No dates.

    1. Do you know when these may be been published? and
    2. Would you have an approximate value of this collection?

    Thanks very much.

    • Thanks for your comment. The Marvelous Miniature Library is from 1925 and sells for about $350 retail. It would be below our minimum for auction.

  15. I have a full set of National audubon society AUDUBON NATURE ENCYCLOPEIDAS 1-12 VOLUMES First printing 1964, 1965 Published simultaneously in Canaday by Curtis Distributing Co, Ltd, Toronto. I believe these were printed in Philadelphia – New York by Curtis Books. No slip covers. They are in excellent condition some slight yellowing on the hard cover but no tears inside or out. No writting and no dogears. Can you give me an idea of their value. Thank you.

  16. I have a full set of NEW ILLUSTRATED ENCYCLOPOEDIA OF GARDENING unabridged greystone press New York copyright MCMLXIV. Volumes 1-13. They have the paper covers but there is nothing written on the covers just a cut out so the volume number conveniently shows through the hole. They are in excellent condition. No torn pages, writting nor dogears. Thank you.

    • Hi Karen,

Thanks for your comments. Both of your encyclopedia sets likely have a value of less than $100. They are not something we would handle at auction.

  17. We have a 15 volume set of Charles Dickens, Carleton’s Illustrated Edition, New York. They are in good condition (no paper covers) and have been in a box in a closet for the last 50 years. Are they of interest in the antique book market? Thanks.

  18. What determines value of books published before dust jackets?

I have a good condition Les Miserables two volume set. 227p. and 284p.
Published in New York, NY copyrights are Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. 1887 and
    Isabel F. Hapgood (translator) 1915.
They have gold covered top edges and have many page bottoms joined.
No markings except for a large gift inscription on inside cover and facing page (blank). Possibly never read. Vol II alone has 17 b/w illustrations.
Slightly marred title on the spine of Vol II.

    Does this have value?

    • The absence of a book jacket that never existed does not affect the value of the book, so for books printed before book jackets were invented… this is a question that cannot be answered briefly.

The Hugo set likely has a value of less than $100 and is not something we would handle at auction.

  19. I have a 1989 edition of Hiawatha that appears to be covered with alligator skin. It is in very good condition. What would the value be?

    • Pamela,
Thanks for commenting. Your Hiawatha edition likely has a value of under $100 and is not something we would handle at auction.

  20. Thanks for the great info. I have an 1856 edition of Kit Bam’s Adventures; or The Yarns of an Old Mariner by Mary Cowden Clarke. I believe this is the first American printing. The book is is in good condition with some wear at the top and bottom of the spine. Is this book of value on the antique book market? Thanks.

    • Dennis,
Thank you for your comment. Your book likely has a value of less than $100. It is not something we would handle at auction.

  21. We are clearing out my mothers house. We found an 1802 Websters Dictionary in good condition. Is this something we should sell at an estate sale or privately if it is valuable? We cannot find a way to approximate the value.
    Please advise. Thank you.

  22. I found a book at a used book store that I have been wondering about. It is The Prose Tales of Edgar Allen Poe, First Series, W.J. Widdleton, Publisher. 1877. The binding is battered and the pages are yellowed with age, but otherwise it is in good shape with a lovely marbled cover. Someone is selling a similar book on Amazon for $155 dollars, but otherwise I cannot find it anywhere. Do you think that is a fair price? Thank you.

  23. I HAVE AN AUTOGRAPH BOOK THAT WAS SIGNED BY SEVERAL PEOPLE IN 1746.
WITH THEIR SIGNATURES THEY ATTACHED INTRICATELY, AND DELICATE BRADED HAIR

    HOW MUCH IS IT WORTH

  24. Hi. Very informative website. I have also come into a large collection of mostly older books. I’ve only just begun sorting through them, but have discovered 1) a 1914 Tiffany Blue book, 2) an 1860 Boardman’s White Mountain guide with an owner signature of Levi Lincoln Jr., 3) an 1863 edition of Roundabout Papers by Thackery,4) an 1867 edition of Kirby and Spence’s Introduction to Entomology, 5) an 1860 version of “Undine” and a 1936 edition of Gone with the Wind – I’m still trying to research those two. I’ve created a spreadsheet and am entering as much information as possible. Based on the above mentioned and what I’m seeing so far, would you be interested in reviewing the spreadsheet when I’m done? Thank you again for the information posted.

    • I should also mention that I’m finding quite a few books with the author’s signature/inscription in them as well. Most of the books I suspect date between 1820s to 1920s. In any event, I’m trying to “Weed out” books that appear to be less than $100 in value. Primarily, I’m using three tools 1) ABE and 2)EBAY to determine approximate values, and 3)Worldcat to determine rarity. Are there any other tools out there that you could suggest that may help me separate the low-end books from the potential high end? After I’ve sorted everything, I would like to submit the list to Skinner to see if you might be interested. Frankly, I’m certain I am going to need some professional help with what remains after sorting. Thank you again.

    • Glen, Thank you for your comments and I’m glad to hear that you have found our website helpful. The books you have picked out of the collection each likely have a value of less than $100, and are not items we would handle at auction. Best of luck with the collection.

  25. I purchased a box of books at an auction and would like to know the value of one in particular. Brown Girl, Brownstones by Paule Marshall. Random House. 1959. First Printing. Signed by the author “To Jim from Paule 1959”.

  26. Hi, My mom was given this book to her by a friend many years ago and she has had it tucked away. She gave it to me as she is getting up in age and I was wondering if it is worth anything. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, Copyright 1896 and 1899 by Harper & Brothers, printed in the United States of America, I am guessing it is a 2nd edition as it shows the copyright 1884 by Samuel L. Clemens above when my copy was printed and I would guess that would have been the 1st edtion. Thank You

  27. I have a book titled on outside Don Juan, it is intricately tooled leather, with two colors, black and brown. On the inside it says Lord Byron’s Don Juan with life and notes by A.C. Cunningham , ESQ, , illustrations on steel, Philadelphia: published by Jas. B. Smith 1859.
It was given to my great uncle by a friend in 1895 as is inscribed. I can’t find any information about its value. Any information you could give me is appreciated, thank you for your time.

    • Thank you for your comment. This book was first published in the 1820s and likely has a value of less than $100. It is not something we would handle at auction.

  28. I have a book by T.B.H. Stenhouse – Tell it All-a Woman’s Life in Polygamy. Published by A.D. Worthington in 1875. It has a preface by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It has a green cover with gold decoration. It has illustrations inside with tissue protective covering over each one. It is in very good condition.
    Any value?

  29. i have a 1906 copyright text book by H. De B. Gibbins titled Industry in England in very good condition. Published by Charles Scribner’s Sons 153-157 Fifth Ave, NY. i have found more recent paperback books for sale on line in the $40 range. Curious if anyone knows if any value as the book is really in incredible condition for its age aside from some penciled in notes from an obvious past student.

  32. I recently obtained 4 books and would like to obtain their values:
    1. THE PERFECT RECKONER NEW YORK HURST CO. PUBLISHERS NEW YORK 1890

  34. Hello. Thank you very much for the informative article and thanking you in advance for any advice you may offer. I was putting books away and found:
Uncle Remus His Songs and Sayings. New York D. Appleton and Company 1881
Has the corrected “presumptious” and not “presumptive” No ads in the front but other book ads in the back. Binding is intact. Has gilt gold brer rabbit on brown cover. Ripped blank page but still present.
Also…I found The Deerslayer. J. Fenimore Cooper. It is cloth bound and says “Gladstone Series” on the outer cover. I only find a reference to this publishing in a Pittsburg Gazette ad in 1889. There is no copyright but it says Syndicate Trading Company and Trow’s Printing and Bookbinding New York. The condition of the paper seems quite old.
    Thank you,
    Adrian Stocks

  35. Hi
I have first edition first printing of The Garden of the Prophet by Kahlil Gibran, was interested in the value

    • The British first edition, 1935, has a retail value of $450 to $350. Auction values tend to be at about 50% of moderate retail, so it is a book with value. For a Skinner rare book we’re looking for books that have a higher minimum auction value, so this book wouldn’t be appropriate for auction, but it is a really nice book nonetheless!

  36. I have a copy of A Greek-English Lexicon by Henry George Liddle and Robert Scott second edition. It is an A4 size book. I am wondering what this may be valued at?

  37. I have several books that I would appreciate your professional opinion on:
    1. The War reports of General of the Army George C. Marshall, Chief of Staff, General of the Army H. H. Arnold, Commanding General, Army Air Forces [and] Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King, Commander-in-Chief, United States Fleet and Chief of Naval Operations— Copyright 1947 by J. B. Lippincott Company, First Edition
    2. History of United States Naval Operations in World War II Volumes 4, 5, and 8 by Samuel Eliot Morison

Thank you in advance for your time and information, Norm Lessard

    • Thank you for your comment. Each of these books likely has a value of less than $100, and they are not items we would handle at auction.

  38. I have the two volume set of Dr. Elisha Kent Kane’s “Arctic Explorations”, published by Childs and Petersen on 1856. I want to donate them to a local auction and was wondering what the value range might be.
    Thanks

  39. I have two books I am interesting in getting a value for. A few websites have ranged from 300-750 dollars, and have left me a little in the dark of what to expect.
    1. Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson, 1911
This is the edition with the misnumbered page for Chapter XVI (says page 23). It is in surprisingly good condition, with no tears or cracks, and only slight to moderate wear on the covers and binding.
    2. Moby Dick, Herman Melville, Illustrated by Rockwell Kent, 1930
I’ve noticed many different editions of this book printed around the same time, with only slightly different features to the cover and binding. This edition is black, with the illustrated whale head breaching out of water on the cover, and the whale tail along the binding. Hopefully this is enough information to pinpoint which addition i’m referring to.
Neither book has a jacket, but I believe neither originally came with one. Neither has any writing in the book, or any tears or cracks. Thank you for your time!

  40. I recently came upon a first edition American imprint of Wharton, J. J. S. The Law Lexicon, or Dictionary of Jurisprudence. Printed 1848 “from the London Edition”. Not the Rothman reprint. Published: Harrisburg, Pa., M’Kinley and Lescure, 1848; leather bound, tight, signed by Geo. Fisher (Sydney George Fisher?) & gifted on October 25, 1859 (the first day of the John Brown of Harper’s Ferry trial!?). The front cover is loose. Inside pages are tight with light foxing. Thanks!

  41. Hello- I purchased a copy of ‘The Lady of the Lake’ , by Sir Walter Scott yesterday at a sale containing many nice / unusual items. It is leather bound, with five raised edges on the spine, gold gilt edges, and quite a bit of embossing on the covers. It was published by Porter & Coates in Philadelphia and is undated, but clearly old. I have not looked at each page, as the binding is tight and I don’t want to do damage, but an inside page makes reference to ‘The most notable John James, Marquis of Abercorn’. Also, there are numerous engravings in the book, some with tissue between the pages. I know that this is a famous book that has been printed many times in the past 200 years, but I can’t find any reference to this edition. Any insight as to value that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

  42. i found an old book I purchased in the UK
“The Ingolsby Legends”. In tolerable condition, but needs some work. It was evidently supposed to be noteworthy due to its being Illustrated with engravings by by John Leach.Published by RichArd BentlEy, MDCCCXL. Any insight to its value would be appreciated.

  43. I have a Pres. John F. Kennedy colorful White House book with personal message to my mother written on the cover and signed by J.F.K., the ink in the signing is a wee bit smeared, but very readable. My uncle Jerry Bruno was J.F.K.’s Advance man. I also have the book Jerry Bruno wrote about Kennedy.I would like to know the value. Thank you, Rosemary Kishline

  44. I have a 1872 book of Charles Darwin entitled Expressions of Emotions in Men and Animals.. with misspelled “htat”. What is the current value of this book. condition is good complete pictures, pages etc

  45. I have a 1964 copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Red cloth cover. No jacket. Book is ion good condition. From a school library. Bonzoi stamp on back. Thank you.

  46. I have a copy of Alice in Wonderland with 48 Coloured Plates by Margaret W Tarrant published by Wardlock & Co Ltd. It has the dust cover , although there is no print date it was probably purchased by a great aunt in the late 1800’s, does this book have any value? Thank you for a very informative site!

  47. I have a copy of The Patent Hat. This copy is or seems to be particularly old.How can I find information and value of this book. I hope you can help me. Thank you.

  48. I have a set of 11 books, Charles Dickens, appear to have been first issued in 1907, but the preface is dated 1843. Are in good condition, but have a library stamp on the inside blank leaf.
Also a soft green leather edition with gold edging on pages of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, second edition December 21st, 1847 with a note to the 3rd edition dated April 13th 1848.Has a handwritten name, dated 1936. Also a library stamp. Is there any value to any of these books? Thanks. Donna

  49. I have an 1839 “A Complete Ready Reckoner, in Dollars and Cents, to which are added, Forms of Notes, Bills, Receipts, petitions, etc. together with a set of useful tables,” published in by W. A. J.Eary. New York: Nafis and Cornish.

Also an 1848 German book: “Der Pfalter des konigs und profheten David, berbeufdt von Dr. martin Luther, mit furzen Summarien oder inhalt jedes pfalmen. Published in Philadelphia by Mentz and Roboudt. Not sure if I have spelled everything right, the typeface is difficult to read. The cover had a lock which has deteriorated.

Are these of any interest to collectors?

    • Somehow my comment was deleted during a wait on reply. I hope you can tell me about an old book my Dad just acquired. It is dated(MDCCLX)-(1760). Bibliotheca Biographica: A Synopsis of Universal Biography, Ancient and Modern (Vol. III). It is quite worn, as I’m sure such age would do, but it is still intact. I see many new copies/versions of this on websites but not an original.

  50. Great information. I have looked on a few websites for pricing on two old books but without any luck. These are Volumes 1 & 2 of Walks in London by August JC Hare. Published 1878 by Daldly, Isbister & Co. Paper page edges are gold color gilded. Spines are gone but boards & pages are good. Any assistenace would be appreciated.

  51. I have a book titled “The Autobiography of a Newspaper Girl” by Elizabeth L. Banks in 1902. Inside is an inscription from the author saying “To my good friend and Editor, Mr. Scott C. Bone, who will find full particulars of himself in the dedication of this book! s/Elizabeth L. Banks London, November, 1902”

Any interest or thoughts on rarity or value?

  52. I have beee trying to find information online about the pubplication date or possible worth of a book but I am unable to find any on the particular edition that I have. It is The Poetical Works of Longfellow (Including Recent Poems). I also have Footprints of the World’s History Copyright 1890 Wm Bryan, 1891 H.S. Smith. Reads “sold only by subscription”, is evidently a salesmen’s copy with pages in the back to write customer’s names. Also has several samples of binding that can be obtained. It is lavishly illustrated with tissue paper to protect the full page colored prints/plates. Other illustrations have a small page insert describing the illustration.. I have never been able to find any info on this second book. Any help will be most appreciated.

    Dear Ms. Gray,
I have a children’s book that is out of print and I know it is valuable. It is Ernest and the Wild West by Ermanno Libenzi. It was published in 1975. My copy is intact, no tears, and the only flaw is that the corner edges of the cover is slightly worn. I have no true idea of its worth nor do I know where it is best to sell it. I would appreciate your expert opinion.
    Thanks.

  55. Hi my question is, I have the book, The Side of Paradise Fitzgerald, is without the dust cover but is on.. excellent exelent.. condition, says Published in April 1920 and April 1920 Reprinted, the only problem I have,is that has a sign that I can’t identify yarack Jelke? eparacb Gelke? options?, I would like to send photos so you can determine ,,, but I like to know if the value.. and if this unidentified signature in a book can decrease his value? first edition? thanks

    • Andres, As this book lacks a dust jacket and is a reprint (not a first edition), it is likely worth less than $100 and is not something we would offer at auction.

  57. Hi-I found a book -actually a lot of old books in my house and there is one in particular- “Collection Universelle Des Mémoires Particuliers Relatifs A L’Histoire De France Tome LXV A Londres Et le trouvé à Paris Rue Et Hotel Serpentes 1790” .
I am curious to know if this is a valuable book-all I can find on the Internet is about reprints in 2011and 2012 so I am assuming this must be a worthwhile book to be still reprinting it.
It is in pretty good condition apart from the back covering of the spine .
Thanks for any info on the book!

    • Hi John,
Thanks for the comment. The value of this book is likely less than $100, since it sounds like this is volume 65 only of the set. Happy holidays.

  58. I have a few books that I am trying to find info on. 4 of them are by Nelson New Century. I do not see a date in 2 of them along with no copy right date. THE CURIOUS TALE OF DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (THIS APPEARS TO BE 1911, THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO VOL. 2, TREASURE ISLAND. All have tissue paper over the illustrations. They appear to be leather bound. But it could be some faux material. They all have the same designs on the spine. They are burgondy in color.
    Thank You for your time.
    Gary

  59. Hi,

I’m in the posession of a original german version of “All quiet on the western front” from Erich Maria Remarque. I think the book is from the late 1928, so before WW II. Published in Germany and survived the huge bookburning sessions of the Nazis. It’s from the 501-525 Tausend(thousand in English) series. Do you have any idea of what it would be worth?

  60. I have book in a Czechoslovakian dialect with a printed date of 1724 (yes 1724!) on title page. A person with a rudimentary knowledge of the language told me it is a biblical book. Unfortunately, I rescued the book from an incinerator so the top of the book is singed in one spot going down into the cover and title page about one inch. The cover is in very poor shape and the spine is virtually unreadable. The pages are quite remarkable in their clarity. The title appears to be “Razani” with a lot of subtitles in the dialect. How do I determine if this book has any value? Thank you for your time and consideration.

    Jerry S.

  61. Thank you for your article!
I have a first edition of “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett(New York: Frederick A. Stokes, 1911) great condition, blue cloth lining – no illustration or design embossed on the cover – simply the title. One of the early pages has “From May, December 25, 1911” written in it.
Presumably a christmas present from May to an unidentified recipient.
    Any value?

    Thanks in advance,
    Phil A

  62. I have stumbled across your webset by luck perhaps? I have a book published in July of 1902 (if my reading of Roman numerals has not failed me) from the Roycroft Shop, East Astoria. The book (well essay) is titled: Self Reliance by Ralph Waldo Emmerson. I have been tried to find a value on the book before my father died but it appears the prices are scattered all over the place. The edition I own has a green suede cover, a hand-drawn portrait inside covered with vellum, the thick paper is not evenly cut (to me-as an artist-it almost appears as handmade paper). Where would I find a more accurate price on this book?

  63. I have five “little leather library corporation of New York” books, Redcroft Edition. measuring 4″x3″, and I would like to find out their value. Blossoms From The Clay by Sheridan Franzell Wood. Signed by him as a Christmas gift 1926. Published by Dorrance and Company Philidelphia. It came with a post card to order new books, a bulletin with his picture announcing his new books and a reprint of an article from The Sunday Vindicator, May 8, 1927 with a detailed story of the author. The book is in excellent condition.

  66. I have a Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, printed by A L Burt publishing company in New York. I can’t find a publishing date or any other notes on illustrations to go by. It is a hard back in fairly good shape, has all the pages and a library stamp on the first blank pages. I have been quoted various prices from various people, few of whom i actually feel have any clue about what they are talking about. Is it an actual first edition? also i have only volume 1 of a two volume series. Any info or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. many thanks!

Thank you for any information you can provide.

  79. Hello,
My mother has a full set of Funk and Wagnalls Encyclopedias from the 1960s in perfect condition. They seem to be leather bound (or some sort of very durable binding) and have gold leaf on them. I’m wondering if these have any value and if encyclopedia sets in general ever have much value, or will become more valuable as they cease to be printed?

I also have 5 boxes of vintage books that my senior in-laws want me to sell. They include titles like Nights With Uncle Remus (1881), Pilgrim’s Progress (1896), and Walden (1942). They are mostly in “good” condition.

Also, do Christian Bibles ever accumulate much value? Is it solely based on the beauty of the binding and colored/quality illustrations, and age?

I have really enjoyed and appreciated your tutorial. Thanks for an very helpful website!

    • The set of encyclopedias and your other vintage books are likely worth less than $100, and are not something we would handle at auction.

Bibles need to be very special to be valuable. Also, collectors are interested in first editions of different Bible translations, and other landmarks in Bible scholarship.

We’re glad to hear that you enjoy the website!

  82. I have a copy of Narratives and Adventures of Travellers in Africa. The book is in poor shape, with fading on the cover, spine and back, and the binding inside has separated. I could not find a date anywhere, though the cover says Alta Edition. What does make this book interesting is that it was bound backward. Does this make a book any more valuable?

  83. Sir are you familiar with a metric ( or Metrik – PROSODIAE)of Martin Luther in Latin, Greek and Hebrew language?

The Metric ( or Metrik – PROSODIAE) book is the work of Johannes Claus Hercbergensis, the famous grammarian and mathematician, published by the 1525 in the Gutenberg printing at Wittenberg. Metric is presented to Philipp Melanchthon along with Luther to translate the Psalms from Greek and Latin into German. Philip gives the book Martin Luther 1541 year, luther on its last page make notes about it in Latin. Apparently the book was in the City Library in Subotica – Serbia ( at that time Kingdom of yogoslavia)until 1941 when Subotica was occupied by Hungarians. After that this and number of other valuable books has gone missing!

The book was a leather-bound the size of 10 times 17 inches, with 332 pages.

Any information about this book will be greatly appreciated.

The book was a gift from the first dean of the Duke Law School, and has an inscription from him(not sure if this hurts the value or not).

  95. I am not a book collector but I enjoy antiques. I currently have a book that I believe is an original print (as in printed in the year indicated) from 1916 titled Tasker Jevons; The Real Story. After reading the information on this website, I believe there is an “ownership inscription” signed in 1918. I currently have this book for sale on eBay. Am concerned I may be either ripping myself off by charging too low ($60 bid / $100 buy now) or perhaps even charging too high which would decrease the chances of a successful sale. The pictures of the book can be viewed on my ad at http://www.ebay.com/itm/350754589242?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

    • Thanks for the comment. The value of this H.M. Stanley book is likely less than $100, and it is not something we would handle at auction.

  106. I have 6 paperback books from the Riverside Literature series. The publisher is houghton mifflin & co . Dates range from 1893-1904. Do these books have any value? Thank you so much for your help.

  107. Very informative article. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
My sister has three books she would like some information on please.

The first is called “Bush Boys” by Mayne Reid, illustrated, with a publication date of 1855, she thinks it is a third edition. She said it was published by the Worthington Company. She says it is in fair condition.

Second book is called “Green Mountain Boys” by Judge D.P. Thompson, fair condition, published date 1839 by Lovell and Corele Group (?), and inscribed to the Minister to Chile, a Mr Herman Allen.(I believe he served in 1824 in Chile.)

The third book, “Gentleman from Indiana” is possibly a second edition. The copyright has 1899 first then 1902. It was first published by Phillips (Mulbrey?) then later by Doubleday. It is in worn condition.

Thank you for your help in these matters.

    • I’m glad you enjoyed the article. These books are not something we would handle at auction and likely have a value of less than $100.

  108. I have a not great condition book (some of the binding at the bottom is torn off and pages very yellowed) Arlington Edition of David Copperfield. Cover is hard and intact but a 1 cm gash and edges worn. Published New York; Hurst and Co. but no date written. Inside Back cover has an ad for Sohmer and Co. pianos. Worth keeping or selling I`m wondering.

  109. I have a few old books that I am wondering if your auction would be interested in. 1. Aunt Jo’s Scrap Bag Volume 2 by L.M. Alcott 2.Websters Handy Dictionary illustrated. not sure of the exact copyright. it says 1877 by G. & C. Merriam then under it says 1905 by Eloise W. Wood and Mrs. Abbie Wood Steward and under that has a W. P. 39. 3. Holy Bible & Hymn Book. I see nothing of dates. It is a Bible that my grandmother had. Appears to be a black leather cover w/the tips of the pages red. There is no date anywhere other than handwritten is Harley Pursley born Apr 23, 1916. 4. Holy Bible hard cover from the New York American Bible Society instituted in the year MDCCCXVI 1894.

  110. I have a copy of Henry Noel Humphries, ed., Parables of Our Lord, D. Appleton &Co, 1847 with paper-mâché binding. One page is free from the binding but it is otherwise very good condition. Can you please give an idea of the value? It was the property of my husband’s 3G grandmother.
    Thank you.
    Kathryn

  111. Hello:

My father was a once-upon-a-time book “collector”, who lost interest in collecting. I’ve just started sorting through two or three hundred books, most old and probably not rare. Haven’t noticed any dust jackets. Most were not bought as collector items, I think.

    One peculiar book
is quite old and in what I’d guess to be “fair” condition. It is entitled “Spectator” with no author. The title page has inscribed in ornate hand writing “James Lomax 1787”. Perhaps Mssr. Lomax was a real character, or perhaps a fictitious name inscribed by an ambitious book dealer. Nothing against any book dealers, by the way.

Spectator “Volume the Eight” was published in London, “printed for J. and R. Tonson and S. Draper”. On the opening page of text is displayed “Spectator no. 556…Friday June 18, 1714.

Honestly, I read a lot but I wouldn’t want to read this: lots of poetry, fiction and I don’t care what else.

Can I retire on the proceeds from the sale of this masterpiece?

Many thanks for your informative articles!

    Yours truly,

    Mark Humphrey

    • Mark,

You won’t be retiring on the proceeds of this sale, unfortunately. These books are worth about $50-$100 retail, and are not something we would offer at auction.

  112. I have a true first edition of Gone With the Wind, May 1936, McMillan. Book is in excellent shape. However, it has a fake dust jacket marked Facsimile Dust Jackets L.L.C. at the bottom. Should I try to sell it with or without the fake cover? What is an estimated value either way?

    • Carol,
A good copy of a first edition without the original dust jacket is worth about $300 at auction (though it’s not something we would offer at auction) and a good copy with an original jacket in good condition would potentially be worth more than $3,000.

  113. I have a Robert Browning “Browning’s Complete Poetical Works Cambridge edition. Green cover with gold emboss. Copyright 1895 by Houghton, Mifflin and Co. Boston and New York Riverside press Cambridge. It has been stored in a musty basement for years.

  114. I have a 3 volume set of The Illustrated Poetical Works of Longfellow, copyright 1879 by Houghton Osgood. Two of the volumes appear to be signed. I plan to donate these to the Poetical Society, but would like to know what their value might be? Thank you.

  115. I have a German copy of Das Kapital from 1883–Otto Meissner Hamburg. It’s a soft cover, which looks beat-up. The pages appear to be all there (and I can see only one handwritten pencil note on the inside–in German.)

Can you tell me what it may be worth?

  116. I have the following books :
Robert Schuller 18 Volume Collectible set.
The works of zane grey-64 volume hardcover set

They are in great condition like new. Is it of some value ?

Also, is there a place where I can sell these books ? Should I approach an auction house with the books and ask for valuation ?

    Thanks
    Bhuvana

  117. I have the following book:-
    Wuthering Heights Etc E & A Bronte
Dark green spine with green mottled hardback cover. Signature and date of 1889 on owners page. Published by Smith Elder & Co 1889. Second story in book is Agnes Grey. Good condition with some worn edges .

    Anne

  118. This book has been donated to the Newseum but have always been curious about its potential among collectors.

This was a first edition of “Why England Slept” signed by the author John F. Kennedy with a personal greeting to my uncle who was a friend of the family. This was given as a gift at the time of its publishing.

  119. I have a first edition copy of Midnight Weddings by Mrs. Meeke, which I hear is very rare, published London, 1802 by T. Dobbs. It has the publisher stamp in the front of the book, the pages are readable, the cover is a bit old and worn. Any thoughts?

  120. Hello – I have many first editions of Anne McCaffrey’s work. The older books are signed (I followed her around book fairs in the 70s and 80s). I am interested in an evaluation of my collection for estate purposes. I am also interested in selling the duplicates I have and possibly the entire collection.

Can you help me or refer me to a source that can? My collection includes some special Easton Press editions and 95% is As New to Good. All have their dust jackets which are protected with sleeves and the books have been in climate comtrolled storage for some years.

In the past I was a regular at book fairs in CA and NV, assisting a friend with selling rare books. I have been out of that loop for some time and have lost touch with my contacts.
    Thank You…Sam

  121. I am curious about an unusual book I found in my father’s book collection: Chinese Mother Goose Rhymes, translated (each page shows the Chinese rhyme and English translation) and illustrated by Isaac Taylor Headland of Peking University, published by Fleming H. Revell Company, copyright 1900. All pages intact.

  122. I have what I believe to be a first edition copy of Practical Electrical Measurement, by James Swinburne form 1888. It is in very good condition. the spine is in fantastic shape and the whole book is in better condition than some of my son’s school books. any ideas on the value?

Preface and Glossary by Israel Gollancz M A. They are leatherbound I think, and in very good condition considering the age. Are these worth anything more than sentimental value?

  124. I have a hardcover titled Miracle Mongers and their Methods, A Complete Expose, by Houdini. Publisher E. P. Dutton & Company Copyright 1920. 240 pages, several black and white pictures and a picture of Houdini opposite title page.No dust jacket. I do plan to sell it but have no idea of value. Thanks so much. Love your site.

    • Thank you! Miracle Mongers is currently available for $350-$150 in the first edition without the jacket on the retail market. Auction prices for books tend to be about 50% of a moderate retail price.

      • Thank you so much for your helpful response to my question about the book I have. Very much appreciated !!

  125. I have the bible designed to be read as living literature the old and new testaments in the king James version 1949. Arranged and edited by Ernest Sutherland Bates. Copyright 1936 by Simon and Schuster, inc. 1230 Sixth Avenue, New York

  129. I have a number of late 19th century books that are in excellent condition with decoratively etched covers, most with gilded bars for the title. My husband and I collected them mostly in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Is there a market for these books and how would I learn more about them?

    THank you for your consideration.

    • Jeanni,

I have carefully reviewed the list of books you sent. Thank you for taking the time to compile this information. Unfortunately, your book collection is more of a reader’s library and does not contain books that are very valuable or collectible on their own. Many of us select and accumulate books, fewer collect like a bibliomaniac. The best course of action is probably to call in a generalist, who buys houses full of books just like yours.

    • Cammie, These books are not valuable, just the regular old books that people have to read. Please note that books with no covers from the 19th and 20th centuries are of little to no value, even if they may have some value in good condition. For an idea about what kinds of books end up in a rare book auction, check out our most recent catalog, from the June first auction.

  153. I have a couple sets I am wondering about the worth of:
    1. The Complete works of Charles Dickens hardback 14 volumes published by Thomas Y. Crowell Company, New York, copyright 1904.

    2. The Works of Honore De Balzac hardback 19 volumes published by John D. Avila, Avila Publishing Company, University Edition, Philadelphia, copyrighted 1901.

    3. Library of the Worlds Best Literature, hardback 46 volumes, published by The International Society, New York, copyright 1897 by R.S. Peale and J.a. Hili.

  154. I recently picked up a manuscript titled Autobiography of Erastus Johnson (later published in 1938 Autobiography of Erastus Johnson a chronicle of pioneer life on the east coast and the west coast). The manuscript is in great condition and has pencil corrections throughout and author notes (typed) making reference to a second manuscript printed for the authors daughter however after contacting a descendant and learning what she had found in her genealogy research and the interest herself and members of the society bearing the families name had for obtaining the 1938 editions I need to seek a professional opinion. It is believed that this manuscript predates the 1938 edition by at least 22 years given the watermark Tyrone Linen on the cover page and it’s trademark registration by Graham Paper Co. St Louis Mo. (The author mentions his last visit to his family in St. Louis Mo.) Where many of his immediate family are laid to rest. Many questions and mystery surround the author of this book and the origins of it’s penning. The University of Berkeley in California has the manuscript from 1938 and Edward Copenhagen of Harvard special collections showed some interest in obtaining it. I know that it is probably only valuable to a descendant however there is definitely an interest. Thank you!

    • It’s hard to put a number on something like this, because the author and work are both obscure and somewhat marginal. It’s not going to be hugely valuable on the open market, so if you have some universities that are interested, it would be fine to entertain their offers. You wouldn’t be giving up an incredibly valuable piece, and it’s the sort of thing that would be best served in an institutional library.

Hauiku Volume 4 by R.H. Blyth Hokuseido, 1952

    Thank you.

    • Beth,

Thank you for the comment. This is a group of reading books, with retail values in the $50 and less range. These are not books we would offer at auction. The books that are parts of sets (volume VIII only, etc.) have no commercial value.

  157. I have several books I got from my grandmother’s estate. The most interesting to me is a copy of Pilgrim’s Progress, dark red, from A.L. Burt Company, publisher. I can’t find the copyright, but it is inscribed with my Great Aunt’s name and address with the date, Dec. 16 -22. It also has a small pink receipt tucked in the cover; bearing “memorandum of purchase” from Carson, Pirie, Scott and Co, Chicago with the date Dec. 16 – 22, in the amount of 1.00. Another is a hardcover “Rollo on the Rhine by Abbott, copyright 1858. There are a few others that may be of value but these struck me as the most likely. Any thoughts?

    • Colleen,

It sounds like you’ve got some regular books, nothing really valuable. Pilgrim’s Progress came out in 1678. In most cases, books without imprint dates are later reprints. Rollo on the Rhine is a five volume set, and as a complete set has some value in the first edition (Boston: W.J. Reynolds, 1853-1855), in good condition.

  158. Two leather bound best selling classics series, short stories, one by Edgar Allan Poe ‘Tales of Mystery’ and Lewis Carroll ‘Alice in Wonderland’. After seeking many avenues, I have only found a few red leather books by the same publisher, however they have different covers in the fact that the gold lettering and design on the binding exterior edge of the book has more design and lettering varies. All are published by Award Books Inc. New York, N.Y.
I have been unable to find any documentation on the publisher or dates of printing. While these books do have “Published by Award Books Inc. N.Y., N.Y. they have no publish or copyright date?

My question, are the turn of the century? Any value status with them?

All pages are present and in great shape, the bindings of both books however have let go for the most part.

  159. Hi, what would be the value of a 1897 version of Dante’s Divine Comedy? It was published by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. in New York. It is leather bound and in very good condition.

  160. i have some books that i received from a friend and was wondering where i would go to find their value. I have some books that are dated back to the 1800’s and a bible that is from 1900.Please let me know where i can find out the value of these and other books that i have .

    Thank You for your time
    Debbie Bridgeo

  161. Hello,
I have come across a book from Lithuania – and in Lithuanian text
    It is:
Stasys Santvaras – Laivai Palauztom Burem
    Copyright 1945

And on the cover page is an inscription, which either seems to be a love poem or poem with the authors signature- it is handwritten in the Lithuanian language and is very difficult to interpret.
I am Very Curious and intrigued.
    Any Thoughts?
Thank you in advance for any help
    Laurie

    • Laurie,
Thanks for the comment. The value of this book is likely less than $100, and it is not something we would handle at auction.

  162. I have the full set of the Harvard Classics – published by PF Collier and Son Company New York
    Volume 1 has a copyright of 1909

All of the volumes are a burgundy color -and are in very good condition
They were my grandparents – can you give me an idea of their value?

    Thanks!

  163. Looking through some of my parents old boxes I came across alot of old books, one seemed very interesting, it’s Alice in Wonderland. It is in a hardcover book in a red box with a faceplate on the box saying “ALICE IN WONDERLAND . By Lewis Carroll With all the original engravings as drawn by Sir John Tenniel THE PETER PAUPER PRESS”. The book has two blank pages, no with no copyright information, the title page is pretty much the same as the faceplate on the box with the exception of including the publisher as “Peter Pauper Press . Mount Vernon”. What I found interesting was the last page of the book says “THE TEXT OF THIS EDITION HAS BEEN SET IN THE BASKERVILLE TYPES, AND IS PRINTED ON SPECIALLY-MADE CANTERBURY PAPER AT THE PETER PAUPER PRESS IN MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK”. Your insight would be appreciated.

    • Paula,
This copy of Alice in Wonderland is not of high value and is not something we would offer at auction. The value is likely less than $100.

  164. I have a third edition of “Common Place-Book to the Holy Bible, or, The Scripture’s Sufficiency Practically Demonstrated” published in 1725. It has a broken spine (single split) but all the pages are there. Owners of the book were Morgan Rees (no date), J Needham 1749 (Hope it’s John Needham, Roman Catholic Priest and Scientist in the Royal Society), James W Knight 1808, Lizzie Barkley Doty 1911 (Handed down from Robert McCulloch Barkley) and lastly a typed and taped label of Richard Overdorff. What might this book be worth? Should I get the spine repaired or leave it as is? Please advise. Thank you very much.

  165. I came across an antique leather bound Jane Eyre C.Bront book but it is in French. I am unable to locate a copyright anywhere on it. Cover page reads Charlotte Bronte (Currer Bell) Jane Eyre Tradut De L’Anglais par R. Redon Et J. Dulong. Editions Du Dauphin 43, rue de la Tombe – Issoire Paris (XIV)

    • Kelly, Thanks for the comment. The value of this book is likely less than $100, and it is not something we would handle at auction.

  166. Hi, I have a book “the Original Mother Goose Rhymes in Black” with illustrations by by J.F. Goodridge. The book has “creepy” little goblin looking creatures, the cats have teeth, they talk about people scratching their eyes out, etc. It reminds me of the creatures on “Fairyland Lustre” China. Do you have any comment? Thank you in advance.

  167. 1892 Cheap Edition of “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Tom Sawyer’s Comrade” by Mark Twain. Published by Charles L. Webster & Co. Just wondering if it is of any value. Thank You

  168. I have “inherited” a copy of
    Saunders’ Question Compends No. 5
Essentials of Obstetrics Arranged in the Form of Questions and Answers prepared especially for Students of Medicine by
    William Easterly Ashton, M.D.

    Third Edition, revised and enlarged.
    Philadelphia:
    W. B. Saunders,
    913 Walnut Street.
    1891.

It is in pretty sad shape, but for a book that’s 122 years old, I guess it’s not too bad. All the spine is there, but it’s torn in the middle; all the pages appear to be there although they are edge-worn and loose from the binding.
The cover is darkish blue w/gold embossed lettering.

There are ALSO inside it, two 4-page publications:
Extract From the Introduction in the Opening Number of “The Climatologist.” August 1891
    and
The Climatologist. A Monthly Journal of Medicine Devoted to the Relation of climate, Mineral Springs, Diet, Preventive Medicine, Race, Occupation, Life Insurance and Sanitary Science to Disease.
Edited by John M. Keating, M.D.
    Frederick A. Packard, M.D.
    Chas. F. Gardiner, M.D.

Do you have any thing to share about the book and/or journals. Also, can you recommend a good book restorer?

    cd

  169. I have an 1829 copy of Sir Walter Scott’s Rob Roy, hardcover, illustrated, dust jacket not applicable, in excellent shape. (Date is referenced in Introduction). I’ve seen 1829 version in on-line searches, but not from this publisher. It’s marked M.M. Caldwell Co. Publishers, New York and Boston, and is printed with Berkeley Library on the cover page. The cover is red cloth with lovely gold detail, and is embossed over the front and spine with the letter “B”. Thank you!

  170. 171. I recently purchased the following:
The Constitutions of the United States, According to the Latest Amendments: to Which are Prefixed, the Declaration of Independence, and the Federal Constitution, with the Amendments. Philadelphia: Printed for Robert Campbell, 1800.
Leather Bound 1800 edition. It contains the 1787 Northwest Ordinance, which was the de facto constitution of the Territory and the basis for the free state legal philosophy of Abraham Lincoln and other abolitionists.
    Original Owner signature dated 1809.
I bought the book based solely on the rarity. Any thoughts on value? Hopefully, it’s worth more than I paid.

  172. I have just inherited several books from my father and would love to know their worth.

    1. Complete set of Joseph Conrad leather bound book set, special edition, published by Doubleday, Doran and company for P.F. collier & Son

2.set of Robert Louis Stevenson books, leather bound Medallion Edition, published in 1912 by New York Current Literature Publishing Co.

    3. LeAtherbound set of 3 books: Lee’s Lieutenants series by Douglas Southall Freeman, published 1944 by Charles Scribner’s Sons

  173. Good day,

Your website is very helpful. I have found many answers to most of my questions, but am stumped with two of my late grandfather’s books. Perhaps you could help?

    1. “Origines Sacre, Or A Rational Account of the Grounds of Christian Faith, As to the Truth and Divine Authority of the Scriptures….” By Edward Stillingfleet, London, Printed by R.W. for Henry Mortlock at the sign of the Phoenix in St. Paul’s Church-Yard near the little North-door.1663 (*I can only find copies of this online in educational institutions)

    2. This one is Greek: “Septuagint Greek Old Testament,” M. Christianus Reineccius, S.S. Theol. Bacc. Consil. Saxo-Weissenf. Lipsiae MDCCXXX (1730). Apud Bernhardum Christoph.

    Thank you very much!
    Kristin Campbell

    • The Stillingfleet title is early, but common on the rare book market, and frankly not the most interesting read out there. At auction, it would probably sell for about $100. Some Greek Septuagints can be very valuable, but the really collectible ones were published about 200 years earlier. Yours would be worth about $50 on the retail market.

  174. I have a complete one volume edition of Les Miserables, English translation, Hurst & co. publishers, NY., no dust jacket. All pages are intact, but the publication date is missing. I did some homework on the publisher’s advertising in the back and have estimated the publication date to be roughly 1899-early 1900’s. I’m curious to know if it’s worth anything and if it’s something worthy of auction.
    Regards,
    Barbara Bessol

    • Generally, books from the late 19th or early 20th century with undated title pages are later reprints, and not first editions. The publisher, issuing a title with proven popularity, has intentionally omitted a date in order to extend the shelf-life of his wares. The first edition of Les Miserables in English was published in New York by Carleton in 1862. It came out in a five volume set, all volumes dated, and is worth about $3,000 in mint condition. We just sold one in our June first auction: https://www.skinnerinc.com/auctions/2658B/lots/199

    • Books without publication dates are very often reprints (not first or early editions). It might also be useful to take a look at the copyright page to help determine the period of publication. But unfortunately, 19th and 20th century books without publication dates are usually reprints.

  175. I have two books that I am having restored in period binding, pages washed etc, by a very well known restoration specialist in Alabama. Both are by the author Sir William Hope. The first book, printed 1692, “The compleat fencing master” I can find information to get a rough value. The second is where I am having trouble finding a value for the book. 1724, “A vindication of the true art of self-defense”. The actual title is much longer. I can only find some sparse information on this one, but would like to get a rough value as well, one to make sure I am spending money wisely on the restoration and two to possibly sell at auction. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Josh

  176. Hi, I have a book ‘Poems’ by Ella Wheeler Wilcox. It a compilation of her poems of passion, miscellaneous, pleasure, philosophical, cheer and sentiment. I believe it is an edition de luxe limited to 500 copies, printed on hand made paper, bound in vellum and its signed by both the author and artist. The cover is a dark embossed green suede which I’m guessing is vellum and is inscribed by Harvey ‘To while away the dreary hours, I hope you never have any’ which is sweet but I assume unrelated to the writer. I know its a late 1800’s edition although it has no date printed and was produced in London by Gay and Handcock. Any idea on value would be appreciated. Many thanks Diane.

  177. Hi, I found a book named “The Picture Book of Wisdom” the cover also says in Pastime Pasters. It was written by S. Markstein & copyrighted in 1915. It is bound, but the cover is not attached. Otherwise it is in good condition. It is a children’s book illustrated with stamps. All the stamps are in excellent condition & only 1 is missing. Do you have any idea if it may be of any value? I can find really no info on it except the S. stands for Solomon & that it was published by Picture Paster Publishing Co., INC located at 345 Fifth Avenue New York. Patent pending is also printed under the publishing company name.
Thanks for you for any assistance you can provide. Andrea

  178. I have a book my grandmother gave me. The tittle: The prince and the pauper. Author: Samuel L. Clements. The book does not have a copy right date. I have a book written by Edward Payson Roe. Published 1886 by Dodd, Mead and Company. The title is ” HE FELL IN LOVE WITH HIS WIFE”.The binding has become worn but it is still pretty in tact. 184. I have The Carpenter’s New Guide: Complete Book of Lines…By William Johnston & Peter Nicholson, 1848, Grigg, Elliot and Co., Philadelphia, does it have any value?

  185. I have a book that I would like to know if it is rare.
Red Hard Cover, Bronte Works Jane Eyre written in gold on outside and on inside it says The Works of Charlotte Bronte (Currer Bell) An Ilistrated Edition in Four Volumes Jane Eyre

  186. Hello, I purchased a brown leather bound book, cover says Shakespeare Illustrated, when you open the book it says An Art Edition of Shakespeare classified as Comedies, Tragedies, Histories and Sonnets. Each part arranged in chronological order. Including also a list of Familiar Shakespearean Quotations of Charles and Mary Lamb and Mary Seymour and others. Arranged and compiled by C.A. Gaskell, Chicago: US Publishing House, 1889. But the odd thing about the book is the back of the book has an attached blue Shakespeare Illustrated hard cover. It’s odd. I would give it a fair condition rating because of some spotting, frayed pages, and the spine of the book has some fraying. No missing/loose pages though. Can you tell me if this book is worth anything?

    Thank you for your time.

    • Heidi,
Thanks for the comment. The value of this book is likely less than $100, and it is not something we would handle at auction.

  187. I have a first edition inscribed dedication copy of “Napoleon’s Marshal, The Life of Michel Ney” by John T. Foster, William and Morrow Company, New York, 1968.

The dedication reads, “For Wyatt Blassingame, a true friend who introduced me to the joys and sorrows and deep satisfaction of professional writing. In appreciation of more than twenty years of help, advice, and encouragement.”

    There are two inscriptions.

Under the dedication is the inscription, “Wyatt, of all the books I’ve ever done this has been the most difficult, but it was the one I most wanted to do. John”

On the title page is, “For Wyatt and Gertie. We’re all looking forward to seeing ya’ll soon. John Foster Aug 26, 1968”

The book has the dust cover and both it and the book are in very good condition.

I was just wondering if you had a comment on the value, thank you!

  192. Hi. When my Mum recently moved to a care home, I was sorting through her vast book collection and came across a smallish old leather bound book simply entitled ‘Longfellow’. Our local bookshop/antique and collectors items owner said he hadn’t seen one bound like this before and offered £10. I feel he might have been holding back… What do you think?

  193. Hello, I cleaned out an old bookcase and came across 6-7 books published prior to 1899. The oldest I found is “Elements of Logic” Published by James Munroe and Company Boston and Cambridge, 1852.
The book I am most interested in is “Helen Keller The Story of My Life” Printed at the Country Life Press, Garden City, NY.
The copywrite dates are 1902,1903,1905. Miss Keller signed this book for my Grandfather April 23, 1936. The only part of the dust jacket remaining is the cover. It is torn at the edges and wrinkled but the cover photos can still be made out. We were always amazed the someone that was blind could write so clearly. I am wondering if there is any value to these books or what you can tell me about them. Thank you for your time.

  194. The Three Musketeers, by Alexander Dumas on the cover, with picture of the Three Musketeers standing, in color. On the inside says “Adapted for juvenile readers by, Carolyn Sherwin Bailey. 197. Hello. I enjoy reading your replies here. I have.. (from my amature internet researching) – what i believe to be a very rare book. It from McLoughlin Brothers. New York. Title is ..”The Doings Of The Alphabet” From my research – its from 1885 . It is a 16 page illustrated alphabet book , chromolithographs. I have tried for hours to try and find a single one for sale or has been sold. I can only find one – in the museum library of a university in Florida. And ones made in the 1950’s as a reproduction of the original . I am wondering the value and also wondering how rare the book may be .Also if it would be auction material. Thanks in advance..Jason

  218. Hello,

I am an antiques collector and found a book at a yard sale that I could not pass up.
The title is Sir Gawain & The Green Knight. It is a 1903(mdcccciii) and is a first edition. I say this because it has print that says “No. 1”. It is a small book and was printed by BALLANTYNE, HANSON & CO. London and Edinburg. It has a very interesting cover with a Royal gentleman riding a horse and a dog running if front of him. In the background is a castle.
I like to know the value of my antiques and have not been able to find the value of this book. Can you help?

  219. Hi Devon,

I’ve been googling a book and am struggling to find out much about it. It seems to be “The Count of Monte Cristo” but it’s actually titled, ” Prisoner of If” on the spine and on the inside, “The Prisoner of If OR The Revenge of Monte Cristo”. Publisher info appears as: London, Geo. Peirce, Printer, 310,Strand.

I can only find a few references to it and it seems to have been a very early translation from 1846. It’s not in great condition but it has me curious as to its rarity. Any ideas?

    Thanks for your time,

    Mathew

Published in Dublin by T. M’Donnel, No. 50 Essex Street. 1797.

I have picked out some that I think may be worth something substantial, could you help with giving me an estimate? All are hardcovers of course:

Brown Shakespeare Illustrated, by Charles & Mary Lamb & Mary Seymour, Chicago: US Publishing House. A handwritten inscription says “Sacramento, Cal Feb. 10th, 1895.” Copyrighted 1889
Light blue Complete Shakespeare with Temple Notes, The World Syndicate Publishing Company Cleveland, OH and NY, NY, no copyright date.

Charles Dickens, David Copperfield, published by Grosset & Dunlap NY, written inscription reads Eva Davis 10/5/25. No copyright date.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Harriet Beecher Stowe, C. 1890, Pub. Boston & NY Houghton, Mifflin & Co., The Riverside Press, Cambridge.

Tennyson’s Poems, The Complete Poetical Works, Alfred Tennyson, Pub. Chicago: Donohue, Henneberry & Co. 407-429 Dearborn St., C. 1897.

Thank you so much for your help!!

  226. I purchased Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll. With Forty-Two Illustrations by John Tenniel. Chicago: Donohue Brothers, 407=429 Dearborn Street. Nothing is noted about what year this was published. The cover has a floral pattern with gold designs throughout it. The binding and 1/4 of the cover and backside have a lite green color with a color design printed on top. It looks old, but then looks can be deceiving. I bought the book to give to my daughter at her Alice in Wonderland Bridal Shower. I’m just curious if it is worth anything. To Samantha it will be priceless, it is her favorite book. Thank you, Marlene

  227. i have a “bookkeeping for today ” c 1932 for about 60 +/- years i think.. it has a beautiful hand drawn picture in the inside back page of the book of a lady with a hat and a mink stow on -waist up picture …i believe its an early drawing from valerie coombes although not directly singed . she is an artist in Ireland. i think the book was hers in school or college, her name on inside of covers, not for sure what year she drew it . you could see the picture on you tube the title is “message in a bottle – valerie coombes ” in this video it looks like its signed but its not photo shopped it in so no one would copy it. any value ?

  230. I have a copy of Les Miserables by Victor Hugo, 1913, and the book is completely intact. The book cover is plain except for a small indentation in the middle with something written on it, and gold decorations all down the spine.
    Is it worth anything?

  231. I have a poem book that I picked up at an Estate sale a while back, the title is (Favorite Poems) by Hurst And Company Publishers in New York I found the book on line but I don’t know if it has value or not.Its dated 1871-1919acording to what I wrote from the internet, in the front there is a picture of a Roman scene its poems are old and the childrens poems are in bigger print then what the front poems are,i do believe its a Antique Poem book. what to do I don’t know.

    • This book of which I speak of also has no copy wright date could it be the first book of Favorite Poems

      Thank you

      • This book is not of high value and is not something we would offer at auction. In general, books without copyright dates tend to be reprints. The publisher leaves off the date so that the bookseller’s stock doesn’t look dated if a book has gone unsold for a number of years.

  232. I have a small religious book called The Book of Common Prayer, And Administration of The Sacraments; and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, According to the Use of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America; Together with The Psalter, or Psalms of David….Philadelphia: J. I have a red miniature edition of alice in wonderland , published in London by Macmillan and Co in 1918, it has a golden stamp on the cover of alice holding a pig and john tenniel illustrations inside.

    Thank you.

  234. I came across the book The Lady of the Lake by Sir Walter Scott. It’s copyright is Thomas Y. Crowell & Co. 1883 & 1888. It has a green cover with gold lettering & detail. All the pages are there. It’s well worn & has been written on inside. I can’t seem to find much information on this particular version. Might it be worth anything? Or do you have any info on why this version seems more rare than others? (It looks like this: http://bit.ly/1f4n4YB – but the one I have is very worn & used)

    Thanks!
    Nicole

  235. Hi, I have a handbook (no cover jacket)that belonged to my grandfather, who was a spy. The book is a French phrase book, dated Sept. 28, 1943. The cover says “Restricted” and there is an American flag symbol on it. Book is in fairly good shape. On the inside cover, he wrote “from Africa 1944”. The first page in the book says its from the War Department, Washington, Sept. 28,1943. In the upper right hand corner of same page, there is
TM 30-602. I don’t know if that means anything.
Could you tell me the value of this book please? no pages missing and in pretty good shape.
    Thankyou,

    Bonnie

    • TM 30-602 is a standard French phrase book issued to American soldiers during WW2. The idea was to give the GI’s some idea of common phrases and language so they could communicate while in a foreign country. It has a value of around $20-$30. While it isn’t worth a whole lot, it is a really interesting piece of history.

  236. I have a copy of ‘Jane Eyre’ that does not list a publication date, but contains a dedication page to W.M. Thackeray and the pertaining preface by Currer Bell. It is published by Hurst & Co and the text type is very hard to read as the print is uneven — bolder in some places and fainter/cut off in others. It appears to be a fault of the printer rather than external damage as it is consistent on every page in the book. The preface is dated, but the date is not quite legible for the above reason. It looks like December 18–. There are no missing pages, but there is no dust jacket. The cover has a greenish floral design stamped into it, as does the spine. Can you tell me if this book might be worth anything?

  237. You sure appear to have become the go to place to get a basic idea of a book’s value! I am unable to resist the opportunity to have a go as I have not been able to find any info any other way and wonder if you have any knowledge on the following set.

History of England During The Reign of George III ; Vol I,II.III,V & IV

By Robert Scott Esq J.Robbins and Co Albion Press 1824

I can see that you have been inundated with requests like this and so appreciate any possible feed back very much.

    • In good condition (full leather bindings, no scuffing, all boards attached) about $400-600 on the retail market, in lesser condition, about $150 retail. This is not something we’d offer at auction, but it is nice.

  239. I have read many of the previous questions and answers and still have a question for you. I was given the 2 volume set of Ulysses S. Grant’s personal memoirs. In doing research I have come to understand that the signature is a print and that they are worth between $1200.00 – $2200.00 (I looked at the sites that you have recommended to previous posters). My question for you is, are mine worth any more because they are stamped on the inside with a stamp stating that they were property of the US War Library? Thanks.

  300. I found a book a few years back. It has some outside damage to it. However I love history so I have just kept it around for years. From what I know it is autographed by the author James M. Kelly and addressed to his granddaughter S.A. Fredrick. There is a 2nd signature I can not make our when you open the book on the book name. I can find little out. The book is a series of reports. This one in refrence to is titled Reports of Cases in Law and Equity Argued and Determined in the Supreme Court of the State of Georgia in the year 1846. By James. m. Kelly counselor ar law and state reporter. Volume 1. Printed in New York by Edward O. Jenkins. No. 114 Nassau Street 1847. From what i know there is 4 known of. One in SC and 3 in Georgia. My question is the book I have being autographed by the original reporter of 1847 of much value compared to the other 4 copies in colleges and Atlanta Museum? Any information will help. I am so curious of the history of this book and his grandaughter?

When looking at the book, with the binding upright, i opened it and the writing was upside down. The binding on the book is opposite of the writing inside. The pages are all intact so nothing was pulled out and flipped. Please let me know if you know anything about this. Thank you very much.

  313. I have an 1832 copy of Benjamin Franklin’s Autobiography. It is a small volume that also includes many of his essays. What is the value?

    • Ryan, Thank you for your comment. Your book likely has a value of less than $100. It is not something we would handle at auction.

  314. I lost some Danish books from the 1800’s that were passed down through my family, in a house fire. I have names, publisher, etc., but am having a hard time finding a value for the books for insurance purposes. Do you know where I might be able to obtain assistance in this matter?

    • Denise, Unfortunately, Skinner cannot provide appraisal services for items that have been destroyed. There are several associations of professional appraisers that you can contact that can provide the appraisal you seek. The Appraisers Association of America is a good place to start.

  315. I have several old books one is hawthornes wonder book copy rite 1879 cambridge printed at the riverside press. it’s signed inside to pauline m bauer christmas 1885. with a merry christmas and then some initials and junior

  316. I have several books that were my grandfather’s from when he was a boy. One is a Sherlock Holmes, US published by The Mershon Co. with no date (probably around 1900). It is a red hard cover–but the unique thing is the cover title is published as SIGN OF THE FOUR, not THE SIGN OF THE FOUR. The inside is published correctly. I wondered if this gave the book a higher value.

    Thank you.

    • Cindi, The first edition of The Sign of Four was published in London by Spencer Blackett in 1890. This edition is valuable and collectible. Sometimes small typographical differences (called “points” by bibliophiles) are used to identify a first edition and distinguish it from a second edition which may have the identical publication information and date on the title page. The first edition is not more valuable because it has a certain typographical error that was later corrected. It is more valuable because it was printed first. The typo is just a way of distinguishing that feature. Stamps and coins are sometimes more valuable when they produced with errors, but this is not often the case with books.

  317. I have my grandmothers 19 set of Dickens. They are dark blue leather, published by P>F> Collier, in New York. They are about 6″ by 4″ or so. I cannot find any date of publishing anywhere. Alot of them look like they have not been read. I’m not sure what other info you need, could you help?? Thanks Sally

  318. i have got an old book in very good conditions. english atlas, 1.vol, asia, by John Ogilby, published 1673. please advice about the value. sincerely harald gleinig

  319. I have a copy of Jane Eyre, a Franklin Illustrated Edition, published NY 1884, by R. Worthington.
Does this book have any value?

    Thank you.

  320. I feel out of place with the wide variety of old books people are asking about on here, but when I looked up my book online I found the prices to be far too varied to be comfortable with. I have a 1978 copy of Papa’s Pizza: A Berenstain Bear Sniffy Book. Why is it apparently worth so much, and what is a believable value?

    • Ken, Sometimes books are offered on the internet at outrageous asking prices. When selling at auction, prices will be based on what the market will bear, this does not apply to retail prices. When buying, only deal with a reputable auction house (like Skinner) or a dealer who is a member of a professional association like the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America (ABAA) or International League of Antiquarian Booksellers (ILAB).

  330. I have a copy of little women, that has been passed down to me by my Grandmother, a lover of literature. The title is Mr Gilfil’s Love-Story from Scenes of Clerical Life and the publisher is William Blackwood and Sons Edinburgh and London. At the bottom of the first page it has Vol. II. and the cover feels and looks to be leather with two owls stamped on it. It is a rather small book measuring only 6″ tall and 4″ wide. The pages are gilded and there is a pencil mark inside as it was gifted to someone in 1899. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

  340. I found your advice to be very informative. I was attempting to find the value of book that’s been in the family for quite a few years, but I couldn’t get a listing due to the Publishing Company that is listed – I am hoping you might shed some light…?

Philadelphia: The Rodgers Company wasn’t in business very long. From 1894-1898. The book I have appears to have been ‘bound’ in America by them? Title: Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland
    listed as NEW EDITION.
Some of the research I did to find book/publisher match has led me to believe I have what was considered a ‘pirated’ book?

I’m lost at this point because I cannot locate or confirm one way or the other. If you can help or advise, I thank you in advance.

    Sincerely,
    M

  350. Good morning,I have a set of nine Charles Dickens books published by the American Publishers Company of New York, 310-318 Sixth Avenue, New York, with no publishing date. The books are stamped with an owners initials and last name on the first blank page.I believe the publishing company was only in business a year or so and owned by John Wurtele Lovell in the late 1800’s. The books in this collection are:

    – Martin Chuzzlewit
    – David Cooperfield
    – Dombey and Son
    – Child’s History of England and Miscellaneous
    – Nicholas Nickleby
    – Christmas Stories and Reprinted Pieces
    – Bleak House
    – Our Mutual Friend
    – Great Expectations and Uncommercial Traveller

They are in fairly good condition although the pages are very fragile.

Could you please give me an estimate of what the books might be worth.

    Regards….Lisa

    • Lisa, Sets are collected when they are signed, limited edition, or with special features, and in excellent leather bindings. Otherwise, they have little value.

  351. I have a book that is titled “1940 Title Leaves” then below that it reads The Gerlach-Barklow Company * Joliet, Illinois. I purchased it at an estate sale a few years ago. It’s a brown book with photo’s (postcard size) and descriptions of the photos/paintings. I was wondering if this book is of any value? On the front it talks about the calendars they prepare and this apparently is a sample book to show customers for ordering calendars? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Debbie

    • Debbie, That’s not enough information to make a judgement about the value. It’s likely not very valuable, but with more information I may be able to help. Can you take a photograph of the title page and email to me? books@skinnerinc.com

  352. Good evening Devon….

I have 19 out of 20 volumes of The Immortal Series Published in 1905 by Robert Arnot with Maison Mazarin. Very good to Excellent condition.

Blue hardcover with gilt designs….NOT leather.

‘Edition Deluxe” which probably means it’s one of many (?) but thought I’d ask anyway.

I’ll wait for your input…. Thanks! Sherry

    • Just found several others (I’m gradually sifting through my Grandfather’s books) that I’m a little confused about.

      Emerson’s Works (apparently a set…I only have 3)

1.) Natural History of intellect – Copyright Edward W. Emerson 1893
      2.) English Traits – RWE 1856 & 1876/Copyright Edward W. Emerson 1884
      3.) Poems -Copyright RWI 1867/1876 – Copyright Edward W. Emerson 1883

All 3 published by Riverside press in Cambridge..I’m just not clear on whether these are the editions Emerson’s son, Edward, published or something that came later. Books are in Good condition.

But I think you’ll know. Please advise, S.C.

      • Sherry, As a decorative set, if they are in very good condition, The Immortals should sell for $600-800 at auction. Can you send photographs of these and your other books? books@skinnerinc.com

  353. I have a paperback book from my father, Ten Boys’ Farces with an Introduction on Impromptu Dramatics. Published Water H. Baker and Co; 1916. Is there any value?

  354. Hi,
I have a book The Family Mark Twain published by Harper & Brothers – last copyright 1935. It is hard covered with Mark Twain’s signature on cover.

I am interested in selling this and would appreciate any advice as to it’s value. Thank you.

  355. I have a bound book with the 1914 news papers from The New york Times, how much is it worth?

    • Sandy, Thank you for your comment. Newspapers from this era are not very valuable and are not something we would offer at auction.

  356. Hello, I have an old volume of church songs entitled “Songs of the Pilgrim Way.” It is a song book published for St. Paul’s M. E. Church in Chicago, Illinois. There is no date given and with research I was unable to obtain any significant information about the age, value, or rarity of the book. It is in poor condition and many pages are missing. It is only held together with basic staples that are beginning to rust away. I believe it’s age to be anywhere from the late 1800s to the early 1900s, but I cannot be sure.

  357. I have a old book called halleluja liederen 1904 edition.. it is the fifth edition
And was written by ds charles murray. How much is it worth

    • Soekie, This book has a retail value of about $30, and is not something we would offer at auction.

  358. I have a small volume “Tully’s Offices in Three Books: Turned out of Latin into English”, by Ro. L’Estrange; published London, Printed for Henry Brome at the Gun in St. Paul’s Church-Yard, 1681. The pages are intact but the spine is loose on the cover. Advise me!

    • Florence, this book has a value of about $100, and is not something we would offer at auction.

  359. I recently found a box of old books from my great grandfather’s era. I was planning to sell them at a rummage sale for charity, but I am afraid that a few may be something special and would not receive a fair price at the sale. All hardcover, no dust jackets. Also, what is the going garage sale rate for books that are just 80-100 years old, but not rare?

Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter (2nd Edition) 1893 Philadelphia (White spine with gold imprinting and red cover.)
Hawthorne’s House of Seven Gables (Salem Edition) 1893 Boston and NYC (White spine, red cover)

  360. I have 2 books of particular interest–

The Poetical Works of Longfellow, Illustrated Vol 2–
Published in 1880 in Boston by Houghton, Mifflin & Company.
It is a large book, leather-bound, and has a gold pattern printed inside the front and back covers. On the inside blank page it is inscribed to my grand-mother from her brother.

Slovenly Peter, “From the Original Work With the Original Illustrations Each of Which is Individually colored by Hand,” published in Philadelphia by the John C Winston Co. I do not see a date. I do have the dust jacket, but it’s in 2 pieces. It is inscribed to my mother and her siblings, probably in the 1920’s.

I’m interested in your thoughts. Thank you–

  361. I just inherited a book, Natsume-Sosekis BOTCHAN, with hard red cover, with date 1918 printed within cover. It also reads Seisundo Tokio Japan on the bottom of the cover with an owl icon with a ‘S’ on the back. Inside on the first page is printed in ink: “H.R Wright Hiroshima Japan Spring 1959” and on the very back page has in ink, scrawled: “1918, February, 1918” with some scribbings and a signature. The book is in good condition and has no torn pages. Any idea what the worth would be? I cannot find it anywhere online.

    • Kim, I can’t find it anywhere either. It’s unlikely to be too valuable. Is there anything special inside? Beautiful illustrations, et cetera?

  362. Hello!,

I was hoping you could do for me as you have for others and possibly give your input on value (if any) to a set of book I’ve acquired. I just obtained 9 of the 10 volumes of “The Works Of Edgar A. Poe” collected and edited by Edmund Clarence Stedman and George Edward Woodberry, published by the Colonial Company, New York & Pittsburgh, 1903. Limited Edition, Octavo. Illustrated. It’s signed by the editors and is #3 of 150 copies produced. The terribly unfortunate part of this is the fact that volume 10 is missing which is Edgar Allan Poe’s poems, so no “Raven”.

    • Terrance, You are right in thinking that missing one volume really harms the value on your Poe set. On the up side, I did see some odd volumes from the set for sale individually on the internet. Maybe you could keep your eye out for the missing volume and complete your set. These odd volumes are selling for $40 to $60 apiece. I’m afraid that your incomplete set isn’t the kind of thing that we could sell at auction, but it’s a neat thing to have!

      • Perfect!! Thanks for the info and your time! I’ve been scouring the internet for the missing volume to complete the set. It makes for a great conversation item and I’m definitely interested in keeping them if for anything out of my love for Poe’s works. Once again I appreciate the time and on the very slim chance you ever stumble across a set like this at your auction please let me know! I’m dying to complete the set. Thanks again!

  363. I have many old books, one I’m curious about is a Gift Edition of the autobiography of William Lyon Phelps. The edition is signed and also contains a letter written to my mother thanking her for a letter she wrote to him. Also assume a first addition copy of “For Whom The Bell Tolls” with out dust jacket is of little value.

    Thanks Joe

    • Joe, Phelps’ autobiography is worth about $50 on the retail market; For Whom the Bell Tolls with no jacket is not something for the rare book market.

  364. Hello,
I have a volume of John Locke’s ” Locke of Underst, An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding.” Fifth Edition, printed posthumously in 1706. Could you inform me of its value.
    Thank you,
    John Locke

    • John, your fifth edition of An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding is worth about $700 at auction depending on condition, and assuming that it is complete. If you’d like to sell it at auction, please let me know, and we can discuss the details.

  365. I have a “Kelly’s Geography” Vol. I, back spine and cover are not attached but I have them. A New and Complete System of Universal Geography or An authentic History and Interesting Description of the Whole World and its Inhabitants…. London, Printed for Thomas Kelly, No. 17, Paternoster Row, By J. Rider, Little Britian, 1830. I believe all 774 pages are in tact and all maps are inside and in ok condition – no rips. Edges are borwned. I have looked on-line for value and see that it is worth quite a bit if the cover is in tact but since mine is not, is it still worth a fair amount? Hundreds? Thank you for any advice on selling this item.

    • Janene, Your edition is worth about $100. The first was published in two volumes in 1814-1817 and sells for about $150 at auction, in good condition.

    • Thomas, the first edition (1873) is valuable, but later editions like this do not hold much interest for collectors.

  366. I received from my dad when he passed last month, A Copyright 1887 “Masterpieces from Doke'”. Large hardback, fair to worn for being so old I think. Some names in front might think are library or student names? Then a dedication to an individual in 1897.
Looks to me to be complete, some minor “stupid” repair efforts on back cover.

Just wondering if it is worth anything.

    • Keith, I can’t tell what book you’re referring to from the information provided. Is the title correct? Is there an author’s name? Publisher? Date?

  367. I have a hard copy of first lessons and gentleness & truth by aunt Alice published by john p Jewett and company 1854 in great condition. can you tell me if it is worth anything. thanks tom

  368. I have a copy of The Water-Babies by The rev. Charles Kingsley. London & Cambridge: Macmillan and co. 1863. Thank you, Kristin

    • Dear Kristin, This book has a retail value of about $250 in cloth binding, and would sell for more if bound in fancy leather.

  369. Hi I have a sage green hard cover copy of Treasure Island with intricate gold flake detail on side and an intricate black full cover design. It was addressed back in 1898 to an ancestor of my friend’s, but it was most likely published sometime prior 1898. There is no publishing date on the inside. I don’t know if this is a helpful detail or not but ‘dead man’s chest’ is in lower case letters on page 4 and page 9. It also has a jump from page 2 to page 4 (no page 3), then onto 5 and so forth.

Anything here to help with finding the price on this?

  370. i have 5 books i think are in German one by Theodor Korner
    Fammtliche Berte ( Gedichte)no date
And the other 3 are Schiller Fammtliche Berte
    in zwolf banden 1847

    • Dear Hailey, Unfortunately this is not enough information to determine the value of these books.

  371. Hi

I have 5 books I have been hanging on to as I am unsure of value:

Leather bound, 1914-1919 New Testament, Oxford Press, miniature size

Leather bound, Living Waters A Bible Text Book (miniature) London: James E Hawkins 36 Baker Street, hand written inscription 1898.

Leather bound, new testament, the leather cover encase the book pages as it has folds that enclose the gold guilt pages. Oxford press with no date except penned greeting inscription dates 1892.

Leather Bound Engineers pocket book for the year 1858. Simpkin, Marshall and co. London.

Tales By Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb, hard cover, illustrated with colour plats by May Mullinger. London: Robert Scott Roxburghe House Paternoster Row, EG. First print 1915.

Would be great if you could shed some light as to value.

    Thanks
    Bryony

  372. I have the Authorized Edition of the lord of the rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien 1966 is the latest copyright date. The books are in a white box with images and book titles on the back. The publisher is Houghton Mifflin Company Dolphin Edition with Ballantine books. It says newly revised with a special foreword by the author. The books are in very good condition with a white binding and a color front. I was wondering what they might be worth. thank you for your information.

  373. I was also wondering about the worth of another book that I have. It is Philosophy of Sir William Hamilton, Bart. It was Arranged and edited by O. W. Wight. It is the second edition published in new York by d Appleton and company 1854 ( in the book it is read as MDCCCLIV). It is in fairly good condition with some damage at both ends of the binding. Thank you for any information that you can provide.

    • Dear Maverick, Thank you for your comments. This book is not of high value and is not something we would offer at auction. You may be able to find out more about your book on a used book website: abebooks, alibris, biblio, addall

  374. Trying to obtain info on an authentic 1st American Ed (1862) “Fantine” Vol I of Les Miserable. Cover is delicately embossed, with gilded spine title, author etc. Inside, it is stamped “Victor Wilbour”. Of course he was the son of the American translator of original French Ed. So, it appears this was from his personal collection. Ay info is appreciated.

  375. I recently came across numerous old books, many of which I have questions about, but there is one in particular that I am most curious about. Dated 1760 (MDCCLX)-Bibliotheca Biographica: A Synopsis of Universal Biography, ancient and Modern (Vol. III). Quite worn but still intact. Would you have any information on this?

  376. What I have is a little different than the literature editions that you usually deal with, but I have been trying to find out some more information on a a political campaign book from the 1888 election. It is a paperback with the title “National Contest containing Portraits and Biographies of our National Favorites” published by Chicago: Historical Publishing Co. 225 Dearborn St. with Copyright 1888 on the next page.
There also looks to be a stamped name at the bottom of the inside page of MAHALA LUCAS, I assume the original owner.
I found a Google book that matches, and there are hardcover reprints on Abebooks, but not much info on the originals. It looks like they were printed at several different sites for the campaign since the Google book publisher does not match the one I have. I would appreciate any info if it is desirable to sell. Thank you!

  377. I have two books, a 1897 holy bible to commemorate the 50th year of queen victoria’s reign, and a book of common prayer 1927 church of England. are these rare?

  378. Hi, I have a copy of Jerry Thomas’ Bar-Tender’s Guide, the 1887 edition in very good condition. I know the first 1862 edition is the most valuable but I was wondering if the 1887 was worth anything? Thanks.

  379. I have a set of 12 volumes by George Eliot, all called the Foleshill Edition, published by Little Brown in 1900. They are leather bound, but the covers are badly worn. The covers of 4 of them are broken, although the pages are still held together and complete. I also have a set of 12 volumes of Dickens’ works, called The Globe Edition, published in 1871 by Hurd & Houghton. All of the covers are falling off of these, but again the pages are all intact. The edges &/or endpapers are decorated with marbling.
Are these of any interest to collectors, given the fact that the covers are so badly worn?

  380. Hi,
I have a Eve of Saint Agnes by John Keats, The Astolat Oakleaf series, printed by A.C. Curtis, Guilford, no date for printing but on first page there is handwritten note dated 1912. Book has all pages but no dust cover. Would this be any interest to collectors?

  392. I am considering purchasing what looks like a first edition marked ‘New York: Charles L. Webster & Company 1889’ of Mark Twain’s ‘A Yankee in King Arthur’s Court’. However, it does not have the same green cloth covering that the other first edition copies I can find online have. I am wondering how one can tell whether this is a fake, or if there were other legitimate bindings on a first edition copy of this book. Any information would be most helpful. It also says on one of the first pages: Press of Jenkins & McCowan, 224-228 Centre St. Could this be a Canadian or English edition?

    Thank you – Mary Beth

  404. I used some of the links you gave above to search book values. I have an Anne of Avonlea by L.M. Montgomery which states a list of first through ninth impressions with dates from September 1909 to July 1910. The book is a green color with the “frontispiece and cover in colour by George Gibbs” mentioned on title page. Prices have such an enormous range (at the abebooks.com website) from hundreds to double digit thousands. My book color and cover image is shown on their site as a “first edition” (mine is in much better condition); and the only non-first edition I can find is in a different color cover. Where might I get assistance determining actual values of this and other books? I don’t know where to find enough detailed description to help me determine approximate values. Thank you for any assistance you may provide.

  428. I have a really old book, and not sure how much it’s worth. The title on the front cover is “Guide to Actual Business Practice and Practical Bookkeeping”. Inside the front cover, there is a sticker claiming the book is property of the Butler Business College and cannot be transferred unless the bottom portion is filled out by the president of the institution. It has been, and listed who it was sold to. They put their first/middle initial and last name on the next blank page in the book. On the inside title page, it says “The Guide to the Ellis System of Actual Business Practice and Practical Bookkeeping: Including Single Entry, Double Entry, Joint Stock Companies, and Corporations.” Says it is Volume 1, author is C. L. Ellis. Also says it is a 3rd edition published by the Ellis Publishing Co in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1892.

The inside of the book looks really good. Does not seem to be any missing, torn, or messed up pages. All the pages are intact and easy to read.

The outside is a bit more worse for wear. The spine of the book seems to be somewhat damaged. It looks like it is down to the thin paper that covers it, or whatever is binding the pages together. While the covers is still readable and mostly intact, they have definitely got some wear and tear.

I’m not sure what else to add, or ask, or describe. I would be happy to answer any questions or take pictures if necessary.

    Thank you.

On the spine the same circle with the clover inside is centered with the name of the book & author in gold at the top. 446. Hello,
I have a quite interesting edition of John Clark Ridpath’s “Popular History of The United States of America From The Aboriginal Times to The Present Day.” The book was published in 1876. The odd thing about it is what I found inside the front and back cover. When I first opened the book, it appeared someone had cut the spines of varying designs of the book from other copies and layed them inside. One spine is glued to the front cover and the other is not. Another interesting part would be the inside of the back cover. It replicates the front cover, but in a different color. My front cover is green while the back is brown and the spine are of different materials as well. When I looked in the back of the book there is a sheet with a few signatures which I believe where of customers ordering the book. I was wondering if this book could be one that was used to show customers what their desired design would be presented by a seller from the company? Also, would this increase or decrease the value of the book?
    Thank you for your inquiries,
    Nicole H.

  447. I have a book which belonged to my mother-in-law. It is called Lesson in Domestic Science. There are no initial pages which say when it was published, or who the author or publishers were. It appears to have been a school book. My mother-in-law wrote her maiden name in the front and the year, 1926. The first several pages are in chapters marked “Leaflet A” through “Leaflet L” and instructing on everything from preparation of food, how to handle food, how to set a table, and baby care. Then the book moves on to leaflets marked 1 through 28, with preparation methods, recipes, and canning methods. The book is 5 1/2″ by 8 1/4″. It is approximately 1/4″ thick. I would be interested in knowing what is it worth to a collector and where I could contact anyone who might be interested in purchasing it. Thank you for you assistance.

  456. Sir/ Madam are you familiar with a metric ( or Metrik – PROSODIAE)of Martin Luther in Latin, Greek and Hebrew language?

  462. Hello. I’m trying to find some information on a book given to me as a child. It’s called a seamans pocket book, June 1943, by authority of the Lord’s commissioners of the admiralty. B.R 827. I have found many copies of this book on line with different values from £10-£200. However my copy is unusual as it was printed upside down. If anyone can shine some light on this book it would mean a lot to me. Thanks.

  463. I recently purchased two Chatterbox books, 1906 and 1907. All of the pages are there, the binding is tight, the covers are immaculate with raised and gold embossed name (Chatterbox) at the top, and date (1906 or 1907 for the second volume), end pages are gilded as well, and in fact, neither book looks as if it has ever been read, much less opened. Cornelius From Rachel Merritt, Dec 25th 1901. The binding top and bottom are a little rough and one page is missing, looks like someone may have cut it out, unless it was made like that. I think it may have been a blank page in the front of the book. Otherwise it looks to be in pretty good condition. It does not have a dust jacket but i’m not sure that it did have one. It has pretty pink shade flowers on the cover. I was wondering what you may be able to tell me about this book including possible worth.

  485. I have an original America Illustrated By J. David Williams-1878. There’s a note on the inside cover to a student from his teacher dated Feb. 1880. On the back cover is an illustration of Europe that was done in 1910 by another student. There is a page long note opposite the map; about the hand drawn continent and it’s illustrator. Hard to read that old style cursive, but it’s still legible. The European map was done on a separate paper and taped to the back, inside cover. The covers are in rough shape but still not falling apart and the pages are pristine for their age. I can send pictures if you want. Thanks

  486. I have five books to question you about.

The first is a French to english dictionary. It’s mostly in french. It does say 1852 on the copyright. It says, “Paris Buadry, Librairie Europèenne 3, Quai Malaquais, Près en Pont Des Arts 1852”. The book is leather bound and in not very good condition. This book is smaller than your hand.

The second is a “Pope’s Poetical Works”. It has no given date or author. But, in the first blank page in faint script is a date: 1808. Also on the fist entry at the top of the page after the table of contents it says “BY JOHN SHEFFIELD, DUKE OF BUCKINGHAM”. The book is leather bound and has a design on the front and back cover and an intricate design of flowers with gold filigree on the spine. The book is in decent condition. This book is no more than five inches long and three inches wide and probably 1 3/4 inches thick.

The third is an 1830 edition of “The Lady of the Lake”, by Sir Walter Scott. The book is not in great condition. The cover alone is good as well as the pages but they are beginning to separate. The cover is green, leather, and very worn. It was published and all that in Chicago by M. A. Donohue and Co.

The fourth is a 1922 edition of “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexander Dumas. The cover is plain red and hardback. there are two signatures Jane Sullivan and L. C. Sullivan. It was published and all that in New York b Thomas Y. Crowell Company.

The fifth and final book is a “History of Europe” By Alison 1853 edition. The cover is very worn and not in good condition but the rest of the book is fine. From what I can tell the cover is plain. On the page directly after the cover, there is a design of what seems to be peacock feathers. This is also on the page edges if you look at them while the book is closed. This was published in New York by Harper and Brothers.

Please tell me the vallue of these books.

note on the authors: John Sheffield was the first duke of Buckingham and Normanby. Alison is actually Sir Archibald Alison, who’s brothers were al professors and farther was a reverend, who wrote the “History of Europe” in a 10 volume set between written and published 1833 and 1843. Alison is also a 1st Baronet.

    • Further ado on the authors: Archibald Alison’s brother was Professor William Alison. HIs uncle was Professor James Gregory. His cousin was Professor William Gregory. 1st baronet was a hereditary title awarded by the Crown snd is referenced to as Sir. Baronets rank above nighthoods or damehoods in the order of precedence.

The first is a huge tome entitled, New Twentieth Century Dictionary, published by The World Publishing Company with a copyright date of 1942. There is a reference section up front which includes an atlas. The second is entitled, Napoleon, with a copyright date of 1926, published by Boni and Liveright, Inc.

Both of these books are in excellent condition. I have others in less than optimal condition and, based on your article, am assuming that their value is not worth exploring.

    Thank you for your time.

  500. Dear Sir, I picked up a two volume set, 1899, of the Life and Letters of Charles Darwin. What does it mean when all the pages have not yet been split apart. I cannot read the book as it is with uncut pages. I really want to read it, should I just take a letter opener to unseal the pages. I am curious that no one ever read the book since it was printed in 1899, but I am going to, unless for some reason the uncut pages means that it is valuable and I should not do so.

  501. I have been picking up old books at yard sales and what not, none of any real value I just like the way they look. I was wondering though how to tell the age of the books, some have copyright dates on the title page and some just have a date,I have one that has no date. what do I look for?
