Note: Leo XIII (March 2, 1810-July 20, 1903) reigned from February 20, 1878, until his death. He is known for his intellectualism, and his 1891 encyclical Rerum novarum addressed issues of social inequality and social injustice. He worked to define the position of the Catholic Church in the modern world.
