Description:

John Piper (British, 1903-1992)

Landscape with a Waterfall
Signed "John Piper" l.r.
Gouache and ink on paper, 10 x 13 3/4 in. (25.2 x 35.0 cm),matted, unframed.
Condition: Minor toning, glue residue around the edges of the recto, creases, abrasions, and residue from an old mounting on the reverse, hinged in two places on the reverse.
Estimate $2,000-3,000

Left edge of the sheet with old perforations, as is torn from a spiral bound sketchbook. Also with the outline of a truck trailer in ink on the reverse.

Glue residue around the perimeter of the recto measures about 1/4 inch wide. There is some rippling of the paper due to the saturation of the medium and some unobtrusive handling creases on the reverse. Minor surface imperfections noted in the u.l. quadrant seem to result from the artist's technique rather than any damage.

Two diagonal creases visible on the reverse. The major crease measures 11 1/4 inches overall and extends from the u.r. corner to the center part of the lower edge (5 1/2 inches from the l.r. corner). A second small crease extends from the lower center edge for about 5 1/2 inches, running parallel and to the right of the first crease. Neither of these creases seems to affect the recto.
