Tomb of Meruka [sic]
Signed "JOSEPH LINDON SMITH" l.l., identified on an unattributed gummed label and with labels from Lexington Art Shop, New York City, and the City Art Museum, St. Louis, Missouri, all affixed to the back of the frame.
Oil on canvas, 42 x 37 1/8 in. (117.0 x 94.4 cm),framed.
Condition: Surface grime.

Provenance: Property of the Saint Louis Art Museum, sold to benefit the acquisition fund.

The gummed label on the frame describes Meruka as "Sakkara, Dyn. VI, 2625-2475 B.C./...wearing a lion skin to denote high rank. The current accepted spelling of the name is Mereruka. Mereruka served during the sixth dynasty as one of Egypt's most powerful officials at a time when the influence of local state noblemen was increasing in wealth and power. Mereruka held numerous titles along with that of Vizier, which made him the most powerful person in Egypt after the king himself.
