James A. McDivitt (American, b. 1929)
First U.S. Spacewalk, Ed White's EVA over Texas, Gemini 4, June 3, 1965. Numbered 'NASA S-65-30428' in red on the recto u.l. margin, NASA MSC caption on the verso. Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based Kodak paper with 'A Kodak Paper' watermark on verso, image size 7 1/8 x 7 1/2 in. (18.0 x 18.9 cm),unmatted.
Condition: Minor crease to l.l. corner of sheet.

N.B. 'Within days of splashdown, McDivitt's pictures appeared in newspapers and magazines around the world, marking a turning point in the role photography played in the space program and in the popular conception of manned space exploration' (Schick and Van Haaften, p. 13). 'I wasn't the only one who felt the power of those images from space,' noted space historian Andrew Chaikin. 'Countless people saw them and understood their basic message: this was the edge of human experience' (Chaikin, Space, p. 12).
