Gillmore Medal, Presentation Document, Ladder Bar Medal, and Ephemera Related to Corporal Rufas Tilbe, 17th Regiment Connecticut Volunteers, c. 1863-65, a Gillmore medal in its original pasteboard case, engraved on the top bar "R. Tilbe/CO. E. 17th C.V.," the medal marked on the obverse "FOR GALLANT AND MERITORIOUS CONDUCT/PRESENTED/BY/Q.A. Gillmore/Maj Genl," and on the reverse "FORT SUMTER/AUG. 23D 1863," with the presentation certificate, a letter to Tilbe's father describing his wounding written by Lieutenant James Hubball, a signed appointment to Corporal, discharge document, ladder bar medal, and a carte-de-visite of Corporal Tilbe.

Note: Tilbe enlisted in the 17th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry on August 8th, 1862, for three years. Tilbe saw service at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Morris Island. He was hit by an artillery round on August 21st, 1863, and had his leg amputated below the knee. He was discharged on July 2, 1864, from the 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps.
