Description:

Louisiana, Texas, Gulf Coast, Great Lakes, and the Mississippi. John Senex (1678-1740) A Map of Louisiana and of the River Mississipi. [London, undated, c. 1721]. Large double-paged engraved map on laid paper, dedicated to William Law, with hand shading to bodies of water, and outlining to borders, cartouche hand-colored, the sheet a little brittle, toned, with a chip in the bottom right corner, beyond the border, 23 1/2 x 20 1/4 in.
Senex's map follows De l'Isle's 1718 version of the same region, with very good details that include information about local Native Americans ("Wandering Indians and Man-eaters"),routes of the explorers, existing trails, forts, settlements, Native villages and encampments, inlets and ports, rivers and their many tributaries.
