Description:

Silver Cann, Jacob Hurd, Boston, Massachusetts, c. 1735, baluster form with scrolled handle and molded foot, the front engraved with a scrolled coat of arms, the bottom engraved "M/TE," marked "HURD" (Kane mark C) in a sunken cartouche next to the handle, approx. 11.8 troy oz., ht. 4 3/4 in.

Note: Kane documents two Jacob Hurd canns with the same touchmark made for Thaddeus and Elizabeth (Sewell) Mason. See Patricia E. Kane, Colonial Massachusetts Silversmiths and Jewelers (Yale University Art Gallery: New Haven, 1998),pp. 588-89.
