Camillus de Lellis (1550-1614) established the Order of Clerks Regular, Ministers of the Infirm (abbreviated as M.I.),better known as the Camillians after his experiences working at hospitals. Members of this order cared for sick and injured people and emblazoned their habits with large red crosses; they were the first group to tie this symbol to the vocation of care.
