18th Century Philadelphia Sundial by Captain Daniel Joy, made for James Pemberton, c. 1764, 11 1/4-in. engraved brass sundial with a roman numeral outer dial, hour-lines, central star marked Lat 40, pierced gnomon terminating in a lamb's tongue decoration, lower edge engraved Daniel Joy 1764 Philad fecit, and James Pemberton.

Note: James Pemberton was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1723. He was a successful merchant, and founder of the Pennsylvania Hospital. He was exiled to Virginia in 1777 for not joining the military during the American Revolution; he died in 1809.
