Description:

Robert Motherwell (American, 1915-1991)

Lament for Lorca, 1982, edition of 52 plus proofs, published by Tyler Graphics Ltd., Bedford, New York (Engberg & Banach, 289). Initialed and numbered "RM/12/52" in pencil l.r., publisher's dry stamp l.l., identified on a label from Galerie Maurice, Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, affixed to the backing. Lithograph in black and brick on paper, image size 40 3/8 x 56 1/4 in. (102.4 x 142.7 cm),framed.
Condition: Deckled edges, floated within the frame, not examined out of frame.

N.B. The title - a subject Motherwell returned to several times - refers to the fall of the Spanish Republic and the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. In 1936, at the outbreak of the war, poet and playwright Federico García Lorca was assassinated by a group of fascists.
Estimate $8,000-12,000

Sheet measures 44 x 60 1/2 in. (111.8 x 153.7 cm). The print is floated within the frame so all edges of the sheet are visible, and it appears to be hinged to the backing board along the top edge in several places. There is a small piece of debris (possibly an insect carcass) on the sheet margin u.r. Due to the scale of the print and the extensive framing, the work cannot be examined outside of the frame. No additional condition issues to report.
