Condition: Fine craquelure, abrasions, discolored varnish, surface grime.

N.B. The original work by Greuze, painted in 1771, is in the collection of the Louvre in Paris. This copy is close in size to the original.

The stretcher is rectangular and the work is framed with spandrels to create the oval format. The work was not removed from its frame during cataloging, so the areas behind the spandrels were not checked for any inscriptions. The stretcher shows damage in the u.r. corner when viewed from the back. Various chalk inscriptions including "K2341/NG1-1" on the reverse and ""FYFE 14-11..." on the stretcher.

The "abrasion" presents as a vertical line, located c.r. along the edge of the fountain down into the girl's left sleeve, overall 3 1/2 inches. Without magnification, it appears to take the form of a drip rather than a scratch, since the surface is smooth, but there also appears to be pigment loss beneath the surface.
