Needlework Sampler, "Alice Abert Richardson," Brookline, Massachusetts, 1878, worked in wool threads, with scrolled border and outer pictorial elements in silhouette showing figures, animals, and symbols of patriotism, and stitched with the maker's name, the date, and the town below, all centering a black square lettered "SWEET HOME" and surrounded by pictorial elements including herons, songbirds, insects, animals, flowers, musical instruments, and the devil riding a bicycle, 24 1/2 x 24 1/2 in., in a black beaded frame.
