Pastel on paper backed with canvas on an oval stretcher, 31 1/2 x 24 1/4 in. (80.0 x 64.2 cm),framed.
Condition: Tear to c.l., mounting holes to edges, water stain at bottom edge, minor frame abrasions.
N.B. The portrait at hand is patterned after Francois Boucher's 1758 portrait of La Marquise de Pompadour. The pose is directly copied. The green dress is of the artist's invention, but the portrait bracelet with a large cameo is similar to the one depicted in Boucher's oil. Boucher's painting, which is also oval format, is in the collection of the Harvard University Art Museums.
