Description:

Joseph Loring Mahogany Shelf Clock, Sterling, Massachusetts, c. 1800, molded fret top and inlaid plinth over the glazed "kidney" dial opening, painted iron dial with Roman numerals and signed Joseph Loring, Sterling below the raised gilded swags, the richly figured lower section with line, banded and fan inlays, scalloped apron and French feet, eight-day timepiece movement with recoil escapement, pendulum and lead weight, together with a bench-made mahogany shelf, clock ht. 40 in.

Note: Joseph Loring was an important journeyman for the Willards and other clockmakers in Massachusetts. His work is known from Sterling and Boston. Loring's account book is in the collections at the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts.

Paint losses on dial, otherwise undisturbed including signature, age crack in base of case, case in old surface, object right fret is a replacement, object left is the original, base is undisturbed and original, period moon hands, pendulum, weight and finial.
