Description:

Greek Island Embroidery, Epirus, early 18th century, the border decorated in a repeat pattern of upright peacocks flanking large urns and vases, tulips, hyacinths, and leaves interspersed throughout, all in light green, light blue, and magenta, offset by a small group of flowers at each corner of the empty field, linen appliqued on dark aubergine velvet, plaited outer border, and backed, 4 ft. 10 in. x 5 ft.

Note: As dress code under Ottoman rule during this time was strictly enforced, embellishment of textiles was thus reserved for the private sphere. This piece serves as an example of such domestic luxury. Often produced in the form of bed coverings, wall hangings and cushion covers, these textiles would perhaps be part of gifts given during a marriage, taking a single embroiderer up to a year to complete.
