Description:

Queen Anne Cherry Scroll-top Fan-carved High Chest of Drawers, possibly the work of Joseph Hosmer, Concord, Massachusetts, dated 1773-4, the two-part case with eleven drawers on cabriole legs ending in pad feet joined by a valanced apron, replaced brasses, refinished, (repairs),ht. 80 3/4, lower case wd. 40, dp. 21 in.

Note: Back of topmost long drawer inscribed in chalk "Polly Hapgood 1773-4," and "Polly" on the back of other drawers. These inscriptions may refer to Mary (Polly) Hapgood of Marlborough, Massachusetts, who married Francis Howe in June of 1773.

Additionally, the center fan-carved drawer is inscribed "Og," referring to the ogee shape of the cresting we now know as "scroll-top" or "bonnet top," and likely indicate that the cabinetmaker was working on more than one large case piece at a time, and therefore was in a relatively busy shop, according to a letter written by David Wood dated October 19, 1999.
