American School, 19th Century

Portraits of Prominent Bostonians Nathaniel Thayer and Pauline (Revere) Thayer. Unsigned, the subjects names inscribed in pencil on the backs of the frames, and "Thayer" on the stretchers. Oil on canvas, 11 x 9 in., in matching gilt- gesso frames. Condition: Minor retouch on the gentleman's jacket, minor paint loss on portrait of the woman, both with stable craquelure.

Note: Nathaniel Thayer (1851-1911) was a prosperous Bostonian who held top positions in numerous banks, railroads, and business concerns, and was a member of many clubs and charitable organizations. He married his second wife Pauline Revere (1860-1934) on June 11, 1887. Pauline was a direct descendant of Paul Revere, and throughout her life pursued many philanthropic endeavors.

"Mrs. Nat. Thayer (Pauline Revere)" in pencil on the back of the frame of the woman, and "Nat.Thayer" and "Whitney" inscribed in pencil on the back of the frame of the man both inscribed "Thayer on the stretchers.
