Description:

Collection of Furniture Fragments, New England, 18th and 19th centuries, eleven pieces including ogee brackets, a cabriole leg with pad foot, a bannister chair back, a bulbous turned stretcher, a vasiform chair back, split balusters, and others.

Literature: The Impecunious Collector's Guide to American Antiques, by John T. Kirk, Knopf, 1975, figs. 119, 122, 124, 130; The Impecunious House Restorer: Personal Vision and Historic Accuracy, by John T. Kirk, Knopf, 1984, figs. 158-160; Early American Furniture, by John T. Kirk, Knopf, 1974, figs. 19-21, 36A-C.

Note: In chapter 8 of The Impecunious Collector's Guide, Kirk argues that it might be better to own first-rate fragments than to own a complete third-rate chair. Of one fragment in particular he writes, "at present, it is hanging on a rough, plastered, white wall, where it makes a striking impact. Instead of lamenting that most of the chair is missing, the remainder is being enjoyed."
