Description:
Italian School, 17th Century
Cephalus and Procris
Unsigned.
Ink and wash on paper, 16 1/4 x 19 in. (41.3 x 51.0 cm),framed.
Condition: Sheet pricked with tiny holes at even intervals along most of the lines in the drawing, small hole u.c., toning, soiling, sheet creased down the middle and lined on the reverse around the perimeter and at center crease with secondary paper support, wear and losses to edges of original sheet.
N.B. The drawing at hand most probably dates from the last half of the 17th century. The tiny holes pricked in the composition allowed the drawing to be "pounced" or transferred to another sheet by forcing chalk or other powdery substance through the holes to a paper below. This technique also allowed the composition to be reversed, if desired.
Estimate $400-600
Inscribed "No. 46" on the reverse.
