Signed "N.C. W..." (underlined) u.l., identified on a label from
Scribner's Magazine affixed to the frame backing.
Oil on canvas, 36 x 28 in. (91.4 x 71.1 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, retouch, minute paint losses at edges.

Provenance: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, New York, to 1919; Mrs. A.N. Wyeth, Needham, Massachusetts, c. 1919; gift to Alfretta Archibald Butterfield, then by descent within the family.

The lining is relatively new and is adhered with glue or resin. The retouch is primarily to a series of vertical striations running from top to bottom through the figure of the woman. There are additional scattered dashes of retouch. The surface is stable.
