Garfield, James (1831-1881), Signed document, one page, June 9th, 1881, appointment issued to Emma M. Gillett as Notary Public for the District of Columbia, countersigned by James Blaine as Secretary of State, seat intact and with Department of Justice stamp to upper left corner, 15 by 19 1/4 in., (overall light toning, fold lines and with small repairs along same to reverse, acid burn to reverse).
Note: This appointment was made less than one month before Garfield was assassinated on July 2nd, 1881.
