Three Deane Family Portraits: Dr. Abiathar Deane, His Wife Freelove (Hawkins) Deane, and their Son Stephen Deane. Unsigned, the subjects identified in inscriptions on the reverse. Oil on wood panels, 15 x 11 3/4 in., in period molded giltwood frames. Condition: Each with scattered retouch and paint loss.

Literature: According to Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of the State of Massachusetts, by William Cutter and William Adams, 1910, Dr. Abiathar Deane was born September 30, 1768, in Taunton, Massachusetts. He married Freelove Hawkins (b. Winchester, New Hampshire, June 4, 1773),and together they had nine children. Dr. Deane "was a physician of the old school and used to ride on horseback and carry his medicines in saddlebags." He died October 2, 1832 in Keene, New Hampshire, Freelove died in Lowell, Massachusetts, April 18, 1829. Their son Stephen was born April 23, 1796.
