N.B. Thomas Hill moved with his family from England to Taunton, Massachusetts, at the age of fifteen. By 1847, Hill was in Boston, where he started his painting career before going on to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1853. For the rest of the decade, he continued to paint images of New England scenery, in particular New Hampshire¹s White Mountains. Hill first traveled to San Francisco in 1861 and made his first trip to Yosemite a year later. However, his career brought him to Paris in 1967, where his studied and exhibited at the Paris Universal Exposition (1867). Before returning to California, where he ultimately settled, Hill stopped again in Boston from 1867 until 1871. The work presented here most likely dates from that period.
