Nantucket Friendship Basket Purse, Jose Formoso Reyes, Nantucket, Massachusetts, c. 1950s, oval form with a carved ivory sperm whale figure affixed to the lid, ivory latch pin, copper rivets securing the swing handle, signed by the maker on the base with a rendering of the island, ht. with handle down 7 1/4, dia.7 1/2 in.

Note: Jose Reyes was the first Nantucket basketmaker to make a woman's purse, around 1948. This basket purse was reported to have been bought by a frequent visitor to Nantucket from the maker sometime before 1956, after which the owner ceased sailing to Nantucket.
