N.B. Elizabeth Verner lived and worked in Charleston, South Carolina, and devoted her career to the depiction and preservation of its people and buildings. She was born in Charleston in 1883 and encouraged to pursue art as a child by her maternal grandfather, Henry Franklin Baker, and fellow Charleston artist, Alice Ravenel Huger Smith. After attending the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Verner returned to the city, where she worked primarily in pastels and etching. She was influenced by the work of Boston-based artist Laura Coombs Hills, also noted for her work with pastels. Throughout her career, VernerĀ¹s favorite subject remained the people and places of her native South Carolina, Charleston, and the surrounding Lowcountry.
