Rare Hand-Cranked Berliner Gramophone, with 7-inch turntable, replica brass soundbox, wood traveling arm on turned ebonized pillar, belt drive from crank-wheel to friction-wheel and oak base with metal plaque stamped Berliner Gramophone Co., Philadelphia PA, and straight-flared black horn, base 9 1/2 x 15 1/2 in., (period elbow and felt, modern elbow also included, replacement crank and reproducer, old split in baseboard, five additional holes drilled for pillar).

Literature: A similar machine is illustrated in Fabrizio & Paul, The Talking Machine an Illustrated Compendium 1877 - 1929, p. 34.

The first Berliner Gramophone manufactured in the America, from late 1894. A smaller model, for 5-inch records, had been made in Germany as a toy from 1890.
