Attributed to Asahel Lynde Powers (American, 1813-1843)

Portrait of a Woman Wearing a Golden Brown Dress and Gold Jewelry. Unsigned. Oil on panel, c, 1830, 21 3/4 x 17 3/4 in., unframed. Condition: Panel bowed, scattered paint loss.

Note: Asahel Powers was born on February 28, 1813, in Springfield, Vermont, and began his career as a portrait artist by the time he turned 18. From 1839-1841 he worked in Clinton and Franklin counties in upstate New York. His early works were done on wood panels and later changed to canvas as he traveled further west. His early works showed heavy gray shadowing, strong outlines, boldly painted clothing with detailed accessories. He left New York some time after 1841 to join his parents who settled in Olney, Illinois. He died there on August 23, 1843.
