N.B. Landscape painter Robert William Wood is known for his realistic landscapes of America's vanishing wilderness. Wood, however, was born in Sandgate, England, and attended the South Kensington School of Art. After service in the Royal Army, Wood and his friend Claude Waters immigrated to America. In the U.S. Wood began to paint as he traveled across the country, visiting California, Ohio, Florida, Texas, New York, Washington, Kansas, Missouri, and Oregon. His travels helped him develop his unique style and the varying landscapes provided an endless source of inspiration. Wood briefly studied at the San Antonio Art School with Spanish artist Jose Arpa y Perea. Wood had an eye for detail and painted in a realistic style, yet often incorporated elements of both American and French impressionism.
