Description:

Dodgson, Charles Lutwidge (1832-1898), Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1866, first American edition, comprising the sheets of the first (suppressed) English edition, with forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel, later gilt pictorial and lettered straight grained red morocco, with original cloth bound in at back, 8vo, (very good). Note: While Macmillan printed around 2000 copies in 1865, both Dodgson and Tenniel were unhappy with the quality and refused to allow it to be published until changes have been made. However, the American edition was published with the earlier sheets and while characterized as the first American edition, most believe it to be the true first edition.
Estimate $5,000-6,000
